Like many FAT:ties, I adore Carpenter's 'The Thing.'

I don't know what's in the zeitgeist, but we seemingly have FOUR games that address the subject matter. Please. Share your your thoughts if one may be better.

1. The Thing. A print and play with caps from the film. It's been on my radar for many years, but I've never bothered to make a copy.

2. The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31. Due for publication this year.

3. Who Goes There? A well polished Kickstarter for a game that bills itself as a homage to the source material, but clearly relies on the Carpenter interpretation.

4. Dark Moon. Yes, I know this is BSG Express reskinned. But the theme is The Thing. I own a copy and it has never reached the table. Honestly, I think the illustrations are rubbish. But oddly, the graphics are exceptional.

Is Panic Station any good? I've never played, and reviews for it seem all over the place.

Charlie, I know you're a huge 'The Thing' fan. What do you think of this new Kickstarter (Who Goes There) ?

Panic Station had potential but was bogged down by wacky game logic / rules. Each player had a human character and an associated robot character. For no other reason beyond making the game not break, only robots could use guns. It really kind of ruined it for me, and I dumped the game.

Man, I really dislike the art style. It reminds me of Team Fortress which just doesn't fit how I view The Thing. That is enough to get me to not to buy in.

The artwork is a bit light for my tastes, though it certainly appears polished. I'm struggling with the price point, and the play time. It seems that miniatures will be included shortly as a "stretch goal" - but miniatures really do seem superfluous. My bigger problem is play time. I seem to think Dark Moon consistently clocks in under 60 minutes. That's about as much time as I want to invest in a social deduction alien traitor game. Who Goes There? goes past that time, and I don't know if I wanna roll with that...

I actually like the art style, just really dislike it paired with The Thing. The page looks really slick, but the game itself looks too fiddly. That's a brash generalization after a very brief scan of everything. Plus, the price puts me off. So, Who Goes There gets a pass for backing, but I'd be interested in trying someone else's copy.

The MONDO Thing looks like the better game, but I'm still waiting to see more information.

I've played both BSG Dice and Dark Moon. I liked them okay, but not nearly as much as I was expecting to. Probably with a more AT crowd it might have been more fun.

I actually thought about mentioning Not Alone (my review here: www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1799789/resistance-futile ), but to me it's more Predator. Good guys never turn or become evil.

If you're interested in Panic Station, check out my review at superflycircus.com/2011/11/panic-station...could-be-so-awesome/

It's as good and unbiased a review as you're going to find. We loved it. A few logical leaps were needed (why are androids not armed) as I recall but nothing too bad

Lots of guys used it as their "build street cred with a wildly unfair review, without publisher retribution" game to review. Or it feels like that.

I'd really like to know more about the gameplay of the official Thing board game. Who Goes There? seems too much like Dead of Winter in that it's mainly "dig through card decks".

I love "The Thing" (still prefer the 1951 version) and am curiously attracted to Who Goes There? -- but something is holding me back... The KS video is slick and cool, but the game play seems... contrived? It appears a bit formulaic.
