War of the Worlds from Ares -- Tripods and Triplanes

Ares is expanding Wings of Glory by adding Martians --

These are Martian walkers (complete with ray guns coming out the front of them) to use with Wings of Glory airplanes. They've been talking about this for 18 months, it finally hit Kickstarter today. For the moment the all-important "stretch" goals have not been shown yet save the first one. Looks interesting but I haven't looked at the rules.

A great subject matter for gaming, let's see if they can nail it.

How is the subject matter great? Is the trick to not engage the tripods until turn 50 when the germs just kill the pilots?

Seriously Barney, you give Canadians a bad name. You should work on being more positive.

Looks like this thing is going to make book on the second day.

$80 plus shipping for the starter kit sounds like MSRP to me, and I'm a fan of having a package on the street before I purchase, so I'm holding off. It's an easy decision because, let's face it, the thing is getting made regardless of the Kickstarter. It's just for marketing. This is smart on Ares' part, as they'll get full MSRP from each backer instead of splitting it with wholesalers and retailers. But it will probably piss off retailers, each of which likely has one or two customers for this product in their geographic area.

My choice could change depending on stretch goals, which presumably will be added at no additional charge. If there's another Martian thrown in it's interesting, but it might be another airplane, and I have about twelve pounds of those.

I love the aesthetic of this, but given I never play my X-Wing, which I also love the aesthetic of, I should pass. However I may go back on the last day to see if with the stretch goals it is worth it.

I want everything in this kit but the 150$ price tag.

Yeah, you'll be able to get in on the cheap by buying it once it's printed. You can pick up a Duel Pack for $22 online plus the Starter box of this (probably for about $55 online) and more or less have that $140 level, with the same shipping cost. Under $80 before shipping. Add another Duel Pack to get the second set of planes (and a second damage deck) and you're still under $100 for four planes plus the starter kit, more or less what they're offering here for $140. More iconic planes too.

What remains are the "stretch" goals, which haven't been announced. The first is a coated paper mat, which isn't calling out to me. It looks like they may hit that level soon, so let's see what comes up next.

This is what always happens with me with Kickstarters. They never seem to be worth the price they're offering at, because I know I can buy cheaper online or in the aftermarket. I'm not a nut for the extra tchotchke, so that just doesn't matter. What remains is the OMG! hype bullshit that just means nothing to me.

We'll see what happens in the next three weeks.

These are worth it just for the damage decks if you play in big groups.

Since we are on the topic of WOG, Sag would you recommend tracking down the WW1 boosters/expansions other than Flight of the Giants?

The card packs add some new models of airplanes which are nice. They're getting hard to find. But if you're not going to go with models I don't think there's much more of interest. I'd track down the most recent rule book to make sure you have the most recent version of the rules for tailing, aces, that kind of thing. The altitude rules are fun, but I'll tell you what, carrying a deck of cards and a couple of markers in order to have everything you need to play is pretty damn cool.

You were the one who sold me on the cards only version. I have 2x each of the Duel Packs so I have the current rules, but yeah I can carry the game for up to four players in a dice bag.

Edit:
Both decks and two walkers printed out.

I feel like I need a purchase recommendation flow chart and about $300 to get back into this game. Every time I sell a game, I should ask myself, "Will future Cranberries be pissed off if he re-buys this?"
