Battle for Rokugan

Battle for Rokugan was created by Shellhead
Now that FFG has the license to Legend of the Five Rings, I expected them to come up with at least a couple more games to take advantage of the excellent Rokugan setting. I was even halfway expecting a re-themed Game of Thrones boardgame, because I noticed way back in '96 that there were more than a few similarities between Rokugan and Westeros. Seven clans, seven families. A massive wall built to keep out a horde of monsters. Feudalism. Intrigue. Etc.

FFG recently announced Battle for Rokugan, and it looks like a hybrid DOAM game. Sort of a cross between Risk and Game of Thrones (but not Risk: Game of Thrones). No dice, but you draw tokens each turn and then deploy them on the board. You try to seize provinces, ideally so that you can take over entire territories (geographical groupings of provinces), in pursuit of honor points. When you control a province, you gain a card for that province with a special ability, which reminds of White Wolf's Prince of the City. Combat also involves placing facedown tokens, and then resolving the battle by comparing token values, with no dice in sight, like Game of Thrones.

The board looks nice, but there are no minis, just lots of card board tokens and a player screen to hide them. Even though there are seven clans, the game only scales from two to five players. Playtime is 60 to 90 minutes, which makes me think this game will be lighter than I want. Would like to try before I buy.

Thinking about this. It's cheap as fuck for its type, and it's quite different from its peer.

I do own it and maybe someday I'll actually get to play it!
