If I had to have 5 DOAMs for some arbitrary reason...
Cyclades
Ascending Empires
Twilight Imperium 2nd
Eclipse
War of the Ring 2nd Ed.
You could look at others like Runewars or Conquest of Nerath or go way back to Conquest of the Empire but if you have those 5 you pretty much have everything you ever need and getting anything else is just wanting weaker shit for variety’s sake alone.
Eclipse is a spreadsheet wearing a DoaM cloak (it gave me a headache the only time I tried it) and is 100% disqualified.
Ascending Empires is apparently a dexterity game (why does that not surprise me ;-p ) so I also disqualify it.
That leaves you a couple of slots - Nexus Ops/Fortress America and Runewars sounds good.

Eclipse on IOS is why it made it into the list; the analog version is long and meh, but as an IOS game it’s bad-to-the-ass

Fixed that for you
And don't forget the inevitable turtling. God, the turtling.
I also disqualify Southernman's disqualification of Ascending Empires

I think it was the second time for two of us, and the first time for one other player. You're right though, and these days there's a lot more fighting.

That said, the "new" version is hard to look at.

This is not accurrate in my experience. Sure, in the early days of inexperienced play we did that, but those who fight early will mill the 4 VP tokens out of the bag and you're left with shitty pulls later.
We actually had a game where I was eliminated by another player on turn 2. He was playing Rho Indhi Syndicate and found an opening to rush me. I tried to respond but fell in battle and my flank collapsed.
I've seen multiple other games where someone's fledgling empire was reduced to near ash in the early mid-game. They had to rebuild from a single hex to try to get back in it.
We also stopped turtling five or so games in, as we realized that if you turtle and you are not in the lead late game, you cut yourself off from being able to attack the leader. This neuters half of the technologies, such as the magnificent neutron bombs.
