Pretty much any American style game published between 2008-2013

I gotta agree with you there, except for a couple of Z-Man games and a couple of reprints of older games, 2008 - 2013 was pretty lame.

I liked it at the time, but most games of that era have not aged well. I’ll take the streamlined back to basics approach modern designs are taking nowadays.

Magical Athlete, Shadow Hunters, Ascending Empires have held up just fine for me.

Yep! And Ascending Empires only gets half credit on account of the shitty board problems.

So I'd have to say I can longer be bothered with games with shitty warped boards.

Hey, Merchants & Marauders and Clash of Cultures both came out in that time frame. I still love those.

I can't be bothered with adventure games that somehow make the game more about optimization than, you know, actual adventure. If you can't handle randomness in your adventure game, the genre might not be for you. Ergo, farewell Mage Knight.

I can't pinpoint a precise problem with Relic that sets it apart from other games that I like. But it was extremely long, repetitive, and boring, so I can't be bothered with it anymore.

I'm also a fan of Merchants and Marauders, so I think there are a few lights in the darkness of that period. I liked Relic because I was a GW 40K fan and because it provided more resources/mechanics/interactions between your character and what was on the board than Talisman did. But, in the end, it's just a reskin of Talisman and I lost my taste for that a long time ago. That's why I favored Runebound because the changes to gameplay from both small and large expansions altered it just enough to make it feel like you were playing a different, but still Runebound, game.

This are the games in my collection from the 2009-2013 period:
Age of Conan
Claustrophobia
Descent 2E
D&D: Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, Legend of Drizzt
Elder Sign
Eldritch Horror
Mage Knight
Merchants & Marauders
Middle Earth Quest
Risk Legacy
Runewars
Sid Meier's Civilization
Space Hulk: Death Angel
Spartacus
Star Trek: Fleet Captains
Star Wars: X-Wing
War of the Ring 2E

What you can see is that there are many European games, updated games (2E games, Eldritch Horror) and miniature or dice based games. I think the only original (if that is the right word to use) design US-style games in the list are the D&D games, Middle Earth Quest, Risk Legacy, Runewars and Spartacus.
The D&D games was a clever system, Risk:Legacy was a new paradigm on board games, the FFG Middle Earth Quest and Runewars was a continuation of their card mechanics and I think are both great games, and Spartacus was the start of the excellent GF9 design team.

The new games that I purchased from 2008-2013:

Several very good games, including three of my all-time favorites:
Android
Battlestar Galactica
Camp Grizzly
Cosmic Encounter (FFG)
Firefly
Space Hulk (3rd)
Space Hulk: Death Angel
Spartacus

and also some not very good games:
Humans!!! (spin-off of Zombies!!!)
Hunter: Deadly Prey (an oddly abstract and disappointing boardgame version of White Wolf's second Hunter rpg)
Innsmouth Escape (a role-flipped Fury of Dracula for Lovecraft fans)

Still, 73% is a pretty good hit rate. Sorry that some of you had worse luck during that time frame.

I'm *super* tolerant to a lot of jank other people get driven crazy by. Must be my wargame roots.

This is why you are pure evil. You write these intelligent, coherent, seductive reviews of games that will ultimately crush my spirit as I try to learn them. Also, every time I read one of your descriptions of you playing Roll For the Galaxy fifteen times with your wife I feel dirty afterwards. COME ON MAN, DON'T TAUNT US!

I feel like late-novel Charlie in Flowers for Algernon whenever I try to learn a game these days.

Games with cool looking miniatures.

BGG's top ten (I haven't looked at it in years and I don't give a fig)

LCGs

Social deduction games

"Naughty" card games. Not a prude, I just don't find them funny
