Anybody played the new Blackbeard?

Well. it's been a while since the game was released and I see no comments/buzz from the F:AT community?

I played a couple of times this weekend (2 players) and while the first was slow and very long while we assimilated the rules and flow of the game, I'm happy that the second time was much better, faster and we started getting into the feel of the game and enjoying it. That second game lasted 2 hours, which can probably be reduced to 1.5h or less with enough plays.

I want to keep playing it, so I guess that's a good sign.

At first I played it a bit like I would have played an adventure game: focusing on one character throughout the game, trying to develop him. BIG mistake. You really can't get attached to your pirates because they can die suddenly and then you've wasted your time getting all that gold and notoriety. Our second play was better and I got out more pirates at the same time (a much better way to make the most of the opportunities avilable each turn), retiring them sooner, and going for the points.

The thing is: retiring one pirate with say 40 notoriety and 4000 net worth will give you exactly as many vps as retiring two pirates with 20 notoriety and 2000 net worth each. The difference is the actions you wasted retiring and deploying, but that doesn't seem like much...

fuck pirate accents.

Fuck pirate accents indeed. In fact, I kind of don't like pirates all that much. Especially now that there's all that "Talk Like a Pirate" crap and all. It doesn't help that pirates are now as cute and cuddly in the public eye as zombies are.

We tried an ill-advised 7 player game of BLACKBEARD the other day, mainly just to see how it worked. I have to say that I was actually pretty unimpressed. It seemed to me that the "streamlining" amounted to taking out a lot of the detail and simulation that was the game's main draw to begin with. Frank Branham noted that it was kind of like a jumped-up version of FIRE AND AXE, and I kind of agree. It felt sort of repetitive, and the slim variety of event cards was a big disappointment.

So the verdict's still in the air. I'm excited to try it again with 2-4 players and a solo game. I think that'll make a big difference, but I'm still feeling like the mechanics are more mechanical than thematic.

And I hate to say it, but there may actually be too many die rolls. I think there's like four involved in catching and looting a merchant ship. Some of that could have been compressed without losing detail.

GREAT production, BTW- GMT's finest to date.

From the BGN article:

In many adventure games (especially fantasy games) player abilities and the challenges they face both grow as the game progresses, but the growth of both is limited in Blackbeard.

Looks like too made the mistake of thinking it's an adventure game...

Berg announced he's working on Redbeard, a simplified sequel game.

Unless one of my friends buys Blackbeard (doubtful), I'll be sticking to my house-ruled Pirate's Cove for the time being. Well that and playing SM's Pirates on my PSP.
