Opinions on a few wargames
As for Men of Iron/Infidel, they do seem to fall more into the simulation category than game. However, I think I saw that the scenarios often include the historical (unbalanced) setup as well as more balanced gamey setups. But they are supposed to solo well. Still thinking on this one....

If you're looking for a simple and relatively quick-playing game for 2, Columbia's Julius Caesar is a great one. It's been a hit with everyone I've introduced it to. The only criticisms I have are that (1) the map is made of card-stock and (2) it's too darn small.
I have a soft spot for squad-based tactical combat games & played a lot of Conflict of Heroes back in the day. I ended up trading it away once I "outgrew" the system (it had a lot of things not to my liking). Recently, I busted out my copy of War Stories and it shows a lot of promise.

Gary Sax wrote: I would like to try Hellenes, maybe I'll look for it on sale or something someday. It's supposed to be pretty different from any other block game (sieges, little battle) which would reflect the source material.
There are other block games with sieges (Crusader Rex, Prussia's Defiant Stand), but they're handled differently in each game. Sieges in Hellenes are different because half-hits are wasted from round to round, and all besieged blocks are A-rated. (I think....)
KingPut and I played Hellenes 3-4 times back in 2011, but we haven't returned to it since. Too bad, as I remember it being interesting and 'different' for a block game. It's not a short game, though, compared to games like Crusader Rex.

Caesar's Gallic War
Hellenes: Campaigns of the Peloponnesian War
Kingdom of Heaven: The Crusader States
Anyone familiar with these titles? Also open to suggestions on good 2 player games. I prefer non WW1/WW2 games generally.
I've played the first two. Caesar's Gallic War was so incredible that I learned how to create Vassal modules so that I could play it with other people. If you get it, be sure to get the designer variant. This really balances things out nicely:

Hellenes has some good ideas. It did not wow me. It seems weird having blocks in that war because you know how many forces are laying siege to your fortress and stuff. I don't know: maybe it's me.
