No one is getting rich from exploding kittens

I came across this article:

www.polygon.com/2015/2/25/8102751/explod...ens-kickstarter-rich

All told, Temkin estimates it will cost around $14 to $15 to create and ship each deck. This version of the product, according to Lee, is too expensive to offer on a standard retail basis.

The payout from Exploding Kittens is certainly going to be sizable, but don't fool yourself into thinking anyone is becoming wealthy from this one Kickstarter, especially with three individuals splitting the profit. In a best-case scenario, it's likely everyone involved will make a nice six-figure profit from the Kickstarter campaign, but no one is running to the bank with millions of dollars.

This kind of puts a damper on my plans to create the ultimate card game and market it through kickstarter. It seemed so easy on the surface:

1. Create the ultimate card game, or just take some public domain game and slap a zombies theme or some other nerd-bait all over it.

2. Find some place that will print, box and ship quality components

3. Send them the orders

4. PROFIT--quit my job, and move to France.

maybe it's just me who thinks that "a nice six figure profit" is still pretty goddamn good

Damn good for what this game is.

I guess Barnes & Noble isn't standard retail.

It looks like they basically have 25 percent markup, based on this article. So they cleared about $700k apiece. Taxes take 27 percent, leaving each person with about $500k.

Boo fucking hoo. I can't even believe they'd post something like that. In a BGG world where publishers are lambasted for instituting MAP policies because god forbid they make a profit, this sort of thing would have the mobs foaming at the mouth.

They've really moved the bar on "becoming wealthy" since I was a kid.

Anything in 5 figures seems like enough for this one. Played it once and I'd like to avoid it if I can. I'd rather sit around and watch YouTube videos with the same group of people than play this.

So, why did this game blow up like it did? Is 'Exploding Kittens' some meme I don't know about? Famous designer/artist? What's the deal?

And, yeah, 'six figures' is quite a range. I'd even settle on the low end, but 500K? damn...that's a lot of cheddar.

Famous artist, guy who does The Oatmeal webcomic. He has VERY dedicated fans. Look into Tesla museum stuff to see another example.

So, with this kind of pull on his fans, I suppose he can give kittens a year or two to cool, then just draw up some more art for another light card game and rake in another half mil?

Nice racket....

And now everyone with a moderately successful webcomic is getting in on it.

I, personally, find Exploding Kittens as fun or more fun than Old Maid and Go Fish. Less fun than Uno, though. In any event, I paid like 20$ for it, which is the same I'd pay for a pizza and an order of bread sticks. That said, I'm already a fan of the Oatmeal comic, and I personally backed the game solely because of the enjoyment I got from this: theoatmeal.com/pterodactyl_video

This thread sounds like a bunch of dudes with some jealousy issues, for real. The guys are making money doing something they love, which is as close to "living the dream" as possible. Fuck yeah, good on them.

Hey, I'm glad for them -- probably no one on this site that is happier when people make money. I was just rebutting the notion that six-figures isn't a "good profit". When most people don't have $1,000 saved and are struggling to make it, making $500,000 on a card game is quite turn of good fortune -- we should all be so unfortunate.

Pete, at least for me, you misunderstand. I'm not jealous of those dudes for making bank on a well-marketed product. I am objecting to the author of the article equating a person clearing $500k profit being "not wealthy." That's my disconnect. It speaks from a place of privilege and doesn't inform or add anything to the article other than annoying folks that might be sensitive to this.
