I don't know how many of you know Pronoblem from BGG (actual name, James) but he's the host of the Sunday group I've been going to for over a decade.

We didn't meet this week because he was heading down to CT to ride motorcycles with some pals. On the way back, he lost control and crashed into a guard rail. It was a fatal crash.

I started a list on BGG for him:

Tribute to James (Pronoblem)

This is what I said there:

I first met James in 2005. He had placed an ad here on BGG about a group he was forming. On October 16th of that year I joined them. On that day we played Power Grid; it may have been the first game I played with him.

From that day on, the Sunday group has been a regular fixture of my life. Participants have come and gone, but "Are you going to James' on Sunday?" has been a regular question. Through this game day I met tons of other great people who have become regulars there.

I also met James himself. He loved confrontation and chaos. If a game featured attacking, someone was going to get attacked. He enjoyed negotiation and bluffing. But he was also one of the kindest, most generous people I ever met. He cared deeply for the community and people around him.

The loss of James is a devastating shock to everyone who knew him. None of us who gamed with him have processed it completely yet. He will be deeply missed, but I'm thankful to have known him for as long as I did.

His fave games were: Here I Stand, Reef Encounter, Bus, Santiago, For Sale, T&E, Age of Steam, Wizard, Crokinole.

WOW. He is a name I recognize on BGG, he was super cool. The mask avatar.

Fuck, man. So sorry for your loss (and his family's, of course). Hang in there.

Condolences.

I rode a motorcycle for years. I always knew "it" could be just around the next bend or at the next intersection. Riding a bike IS dangerous.

I played Dune with him at Unity Games back in 2008 and to date (even though the event appears to be defunct), James was the friendliest person I met there. Condolences.

We've always bumped heads on BGG, but he was a interesting and unique character...And truthfully, no matter how we get along online, a loss of a fellow gamer is always a terrible thing.

Condolences.

I totally remember him. He was way too young. From his profile:

These are a few of my favorite things: puttanesca, avocados, olives, salsa, sushi, sake, red wine, Belgian beers, hallucinogens, freshly opened vinyl, live music, punk, new wave, no wave, free jazz, free speech, paints, graffiti, masks, board games, poker, billiards, motorcycles, bicycles, unicycles, open source software, animals, my friends, NYC, San Francisco, Kennebunkport, mountains, beaches, great ideas, dreams, thunder storms, silence, wood, metal, fire, water, lists.

That's awful. He always seemed like a great guy from his posts, full of humour and insight.

I have this pipe dream that one day I'll fly to the states and meet you all. There's one less reason to come, now.
