My main hobby doesn't cost me a penny anymore

Hey, so some guy from Guatemala was talking on another website about how he hasn't spent a penny on video games in over a year and it made me realize something. I haven't spent a penny on video games since November 5, 2014 when I bought Magic 2015.

Keep in mind video gaming is my number one hobby and time-sink. I used to spend a ton of money on video games. Probably buying a new game a month on average?

This tells me that the industry must have changed way more than I thought. Part of it is getting two free games a month through Games with Gold (Xbox Live) which costs me $40-$60 per year, but I barely play those games at all, most of them I don't even touch (and stuff like Rayman Legends and Tomb Raider is in there).

I think it's more this free-to-play thing that's totally getting me. Magic Duels: Origins is one example of a free game with lots going on, and I already know that when I'm done with that, I'll likely start up another free-to-play game, Gems of War (looks like Puzzle Quest spliced with Magic).

I was a big AAA-game fan and enjoyed many of those, but I just don't buy them anymore. I've skipped the last two Call of Duty games, just not feeling them. Fallout 4 just came out and I was a massive fan of Fallout 3, but feel no real desire to get Fallout 4. I know deep down I really want to buy GTA V on Xbox One but I just never pull the trigger.

I'm thinking it's the psychology behind the making of these free-to-play games that keep you going back for more (grinding more gold to spend in-game), competitive ladder systems and such. I just can't get enough of them.

It's cool that my main hobby doesn't cost me a penny.

I spend very little as well, but it isn't because of free-to-play. I opted out of this generation of consoles, and I'm not really into AAA titles anymore. So that leaves smaller indie titles on PC that I can get for less than $5 if I wait long enough. Same with the rare AAA title I might want, like Wolfenstein New Order. Still waiting for that to get to $5. I don't mind waiting several years.

Cheap roguelikes last me a long time. Downwell is $3 and I'm 25 hours in and still haven't beat normal mode, let alone hard mode. I've put in 150 and 175 hours into Spelunky and Binding of Isaac, respectively. I think I spent $15 combined for both of those games.

I spend about $200.00 per year, including LIVE for Xbox. The free games are cool and I do play many of them (although DIRT is a horrible racing game, mainly due to the many many load screens).

But most of my shit comes through humble bundle or Steam sales. This year is going to be bad since I need to get an Xbox1 and Fallout 4 (Note: Third console I've bought for a Fallout title).

I spend less than I used to since I have really got a ridiculous backlog. Bundles can still suck me in. I'm sure I'll scoop up several games this holiday for the Steam sale.

I scroll through my steam game list and see something, and think "oh yeah, I forgot I had that" :)
