I really liked this article. It's about a lapsed Magic player who enters a draft, just to see how well the game holds up for him. I wish we had more writing like this within the hobby.

Funny, much like the article, I started playing in 6th grade way back in Revised edition, played for a few years, then abandoned it. Then about 5 years ago I got back into it because a few of my friends played it, and really enjoyed myself. We only played free-for-all multiplayer, which aside from being entertaining and having to deal with the politics, there was never any high level competition decks necessary. We all still bought quite a bit of cards, but it was mostly to make ridiculous decks that, due to the slower nature of multiplayer, had time to balloon into unstoppable monsters if left unchecked.

"Hey Brian, what do you have going on over there?"
"Oh nothing, just making 15 thopters a turn and gaining as much life, don't mind me."
"How much life do you have?"
"180."
"God damn it."

But it ran its course, and I grew less interested, and I got out of it. It was still pretty fun while it lasted.

I got into Magic in my mid-'20s, starting with Arabian Nights. And I got out during Ice Age and never looked back. I sold my most valuable cards and still have about 100 commons and uncommons sitting around somewhere. I use 25 land cards for a $1 Cheapass game called Landyland that actually requires Magic land cards as a game component.

Still, that was a decent article. Thanks for linking it.

Great article.

It kinda holds a mirror up for me and has given me a lot to think about.

Thanks!

I think that was the only Magic article I've ever read that I really liked despite being full of factual inaccuracies (they did not change "attack" to "swing", Serra Angel is the exact same rarity now as it was back when he was playing, etc.). Magic is a game that you can easily get a very, very personal connection to.

Swing is a pretty standard non-official term though. I blame the internet.
