"Learn Magic Cards"

I just got a full hour of literal LOLz out of this, and thought the other Magic players might as well:

forums.goodgamery.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5527

There are too many highlights to even excerpt favorites, but here's a taste to give you an idea (this is from a published book about how to play Magic):

The second card, Frozen Shade , a Summon Shade card which requires one black mana and two other color mana to cast, can attack your opponent with a power of 2 and toughness of 2 and adds +1/+1 (power/toughness) to all black creature cards in play. This ability is called "pumping," and the attacking card is called a "pumpable" card. This is a fairly powerful card because it strengthens the overall attack (power) and defense (toughness) capabilities of all black creatures in play. Note that this card has an upkeep cost of one black mana to stay in play. The upkeep cost is indicated by the text preceding the ":" in the text description area of the card.

Ohhhh, now I get it! Thanks for the explanation. Lolwtfomgbbq

Mana is always said to be "colorless". This is because mana can be changed to different colors with the effects of other cards. When a mana-producing card is first played, it always generates the type of mana (colored or colorless) that is specified on the card. It is only afterward that it becomes colorless.

It saddens me to find out we were playing Frozen Shade so wrong, so many years ago. That guy is a fucking monster and we didn't know it.

This, this is beyond wrong. I mean, this isn't intentional but the fact that he must have had enough of a terrible understanding of the game to be this wrong simply cracks me up. I mean, seriously:

* castle + the hive
* alabaster potion + reset
* ornithopter + unholy strength
* jade monolith + ali from cairo (credited to our own mark rosewater)
* pyramids + balance

This means the author understood the game well enough to see how these cards interact with each other but so little that he thought Castle+The Hive was a combo. What the hell man.

I seem to remember that some of the text on earlier cards was pretty unclear.

It was! I even linked to the awfully-unclear Beta version of Frozen Shade to demonstrate. However, it was not so unclear that...this...could happen. I mean, I was 10 years old, and while it was a bit bumpy at first, I was playing correctly within a week.

If you've ever felt bad about explaining a rule wrong in a game: at least you didn't get 90% of the rules wrong. And then write a book about how to play.

Some cards were very difficult to parse in Ye Olden Tymes. Some examples:
The original Aladdin's Lamp had a casting cost of {5}{5}, because the printer didn't have art for {10}.
The original wording of Floral Spuzzem:

If Floral Spuzzem attacks an opponent and is not blocked, then Floral Spuzzem may choose to destroy a target artifact under that opponent's control and deal no damage.

You might be waiting a long time for that card to figure out if it wants to destroy an artifact.
