3D printing alternative miniatures for Space Hulk

So I'm bidding on a copy of Space Hulk without the miniatures. I think it will cost about $25 shipped. I like the miniatures, but felt like they didn't really fit on the board.

In related news, our campus just announced a new 3D printing lab. If you pay for the plastic spool, you can use the machines for free.

I'm wondering if I could/should print out some alternative miniatures for Space Hulk, or just buy a set of something online that looks cool but isn't horrifically expensive.

My wife suggested we use the 3D printer to make lifelike versions of ourselves to use in different boardgames.

Not knowing your particular 3D modeling skills, I think it's safe to say that 3D printing as yet can't produce great miniatures, and are at best a far cry from GW. I'd look for alternates. The Enforcer faction from Mantic's Deadzone might be a good fit.

That is good advice. I'm wondering if I could print miniatures that are still fairly interesting.

These are the printers that are presumably available:

I can use heroscape figures or some other proxy in the meantime.

I looked at the enforcer pack and they look great.

Someone on Reddit 3D printed a Warhammer army:

AT-43, the marines (steel, star troopers, spetznatz) are pretty well done minis, and for the aliens, the Therian golems are pretty good and come in some larger unique sculpts as well as the golem / grunts, theres even some smaller sized mechs, armoured gorillas and the zombie faction. Easy to get enough to play Space Hulk without spending too much and pre painted for the win. I use mine to pimp out stuff like Forlorn Hope as well. They even work well in stuff like Doom but there I like to use Haloclix marines in red, blue, green and white and play deathmatch

Those AT-43 sculpts look good. It would probably cost me more than the originals to fully stock the game, however. I may get some Aliens Heroclix for the Genestealers.

For now I am going to buy some clear card stands and make proxies by photoshopping our faces onto Space Marines. Not sure what I'll use for the monsters.

So I stopped by the campus 3d lab (have to upload those photos) and they have many cool printers, but they use the ABS plastic machines, and a cubic inch of material costs five bucks, so that pretty much rules out miniatures. I'm going to try and print something there, however. Now I'm leaning towards custom standups that have the faces of my kids on them.

Here's a nice clip on Jackie Wan, who taught himself to sculpt and make minis.
