What are you waiting to go ON CLEARANCE in a year?

That surprises me. It's never talked about locally in what is a thriving gaming community and copies languish on the shelves. I got mine for $70 at an FLGS.

Selling 500 copies at a convention doesn't mean you'll sell 10000 in retail. You can only ride the buzz so far. For whatever reason, FFG's Star Wars games have way more legs than GF9's Star Trek ones. And it's not even just design quality. Sons of Anarchy is well liked, but it still goes on clearance at places. A big chunk of it is presentation and component quality.
Even at 30% off (69.99),* the usual response to Star Trek Ascendancy when they see the price is that retching face, or "I don't want to look poor so I'm gonna walk around a bit more before I leave."
People who organize meetups or spend 5k a year will read sites like this or BGG, but the average person who buys a game in a physical store is a little different. The new people will feel fine buying electronic battleship for $35, and will expect something big like ascendancy to be $50
*I dropped them down to $50 yesterday. I'll tell you how long it takes to sell 2.

It's already sold through at least one large print run. From what I've seen with other $100 games, that's not too common.

Very cool expansion that goes in the opposite direction of Power Creep. Play one of these armies if you want to further challenge yourself or handicap yourself against a newer player. Love it.

I still have four countries from the original in their shrinkwrap. That's never been an issue for me.

1) its three players (although the expansions fix that)
2) it's pretty long (the expansions make it longer)
3) it's classic Trek, which is rarely a hot commodity.
It's a great game but the three players and hour plus per player hurts it. And really is a game for Trek fans...if you don't connect with that, then it sort of doesn't make sense to play it over Eclipse or other more flexible games.

4) And for a long game a player can still get knocked out early-ish if luck goes against him and for one of his opponents.

Yeah, I think that the very interesting exploration mechanic that can be dangerous if unlucky just can't be paired with the Risk-like 'build & attack & attack & attack ...'' mechanic.
