Horus Heresy Humble Bundle
Bundles starting at $1. $15 gets you the first 15 books plus some audio books, art books and comics. As per usual with Humble Bundle, you can give all the money to charity if you have some personal beef with Games Workshop.

I've read some of the Dan Abnett stuff- very worthwhile. I might have to pick this up, that is a hell of a deal.
"First 15 books"...ha ha! It just goes on and on...

I've read the first 32 or so of Horus Heresy. He quality ranges from very good to the worst book I have ever read (Battle for the Abyss).
I'd recommend it overall.

The games on offer (well, discount coupons) are all good. Horus Heresy is another concept for 40k Talisman - very different than Relic. Battlefleet Gothic is awesome- it's the board game on IOS. Battle of Tallarn is kind of doofy because it's that company's standard hex based tank game with HH livery. It's a decent time killer though and it has Baneblades.
I might get back into reading these after I finish the Night Lords book, which may be the best 40k book I've read.

Well yeah, it's by Dembski-Bowden. He's probably the most consistent of the writers. My rankings:
1. Dembski-Bowden
2. Abnett
3. Mitchell
4. McNeill
5. Haley
Everyone else is all over the place with Counter being consistently bad.
Edit: added Mitchell

I think I'd rather read a "history" of this conflict than some rando's tale in it. Is one or more of these books written like that?

The Visions of Heresy art/history/random stuff book is kind of like that, as well as the lore portions of Forge World's HH rule books.
There is not anything of the sort in the actual novel series.

The better books are surprisingly decent reads with quality writing- not random fanfic at all. The Abnett stuff is really well done- the Eisenhorn books aren't in this lot but they are really good, lots of interesting characters, compelling plots, and lots of awesome 40k lore. There is one part in particular that sticks with me...there are no Space Marines in like the first 200 pages. When one finally shows up, it's a Chaos marine and his appearance really brings home how scary they are. I really love this particular scene because it's terrifying, but also because of how the CSM is described- gaudy, overdecorated, decadent, and malignant.
There are plenty of junk Warhammer books like you'd expect from any fiction based on gaming IP, but there are plenty that are worth reading if you like the setting...and this is coming from someone that is EXTREMELY choosy about genre novels to he point where my expectations are just unrealistic.
The better books do a better job of telling these stories than the stuff in the game materials

I bought the bundle, as I have been working my way through the novels anyway. I'm halfway done with book 3. The first book is by Abnett and so far has been the best of the lot, but I haven't been unhappy with any of it yet. I got interested after getting Betrayal at Calth. I'm told that the events of that game don't take place until book 18 or so, so it will be a while before I get to that point.
