I knew who Marv Newland was some time ago... but I didn't know much. The only thing I was familiar with was his 1969 cartoon Bambi vs. Godzilla.
A couple of days ago I was thinking about how it was the perfect internet video from before the days of internet. Short, humorous, mildly clever, with a sense of humour about itself. I'm sure everyone here has seen it but just in case here is the original classic.
Of course it's also pretty stupid, but it was a student film and he made it entirely by himself (as the silly credits joke), and for that, at the time... I still see it as an important cartoon.
So after I watched it I researched Marv Newland... I know there are other animation buffs on the site. People who love Fleischer cartoons and Bob Clampett as much as I do. Well when I looked at Marv's other work, from much later than Bambi, I was blown away!...
He started a company right here in Vancouver called Rocketship Studios... cool name, great location... what about the cartoons themselves. Well the first I watched was Anijam and it blew my mind. Such incredible imagination and creativity on display. Amazing.
There's Sing Beast Sing (1980), Anijam (1984), Hooray for Sandbox Land (1985), Black Hula (1988), Pink Komkommer (1991), and Fuv (1999).
Pink Komkommer is fucking bizarre. It's supposed to be a series of erotic dreams that some elderly woman is having. Definitely worth watching. In any case they are all worth watching and are all interesting.
It's so easy to miss these types of things. If you took part in any of the Spike and Mikes sick and twisted shows back when they played you may have caught some of these. If you didn't, watch them now, they're amazing.
