Night's Black Agents Review

The first question I tend to ask when faced with a new role-playing game is: why? Why does this game exist? What does it do that I can't do with my favourite existing role-playing system? And even the strapline on Night's Black Agents, "a vampire spy thriller" barks that question at the full moon. If you want a vampire spy thriller, surely something like Cthulhu or Dresden Files or even Shadowrun already fits the bill?

Sounds interesting, nice review. Do you know if there are any campaigns or adventures out for it?

There's nothing in the rules - a weakness which I ought to have covered in the review.

There are a few adventures from the author and the publisher. Most notable is The Dracula Dossier, an entire campaign posited on the idea that the novel Dracula is a loose retelling of real events. However, in this version, Jonathan Harker was a British spy instead of an accountant ...

I wish this was around at least 15 years ago, when I was still doing RPGs, because that would have been an insta-buy.
I remember trying to run a vampire-conspiracy campaign in Vampire Masquerade system. It didn't work out, because both the system and the world itself were geared towards what was considered to be cool in the 90ies, i.e. internal tribulations and self-loathing. It was kinda assumed that the world was run by a vampire conspiracy, but the logistics of said conspiracy were sketchy at best. I still find it extremely cool to have a sort real-world issues and conflicts, but instead of a bunch of whisky-sipping old guys in suits pulling the strings from a boardroom, to have a 1000 year old guys in suits pulling the strings from a boardroom, at nighttime, while sipping blood.

Timely for me, because I may try to run a one shot for Fear Itself (another GUMSHOE game) in a couple weeks. I'm really relying on the one-shot in the book to help concretize the system.
