Better than I expected!
I think that if Roma didn’t come out in 2018, Green Book would likely win Best Picture at the Oscars. It’s exactly their type of movie and will remind some viewers of Driving Miss Daisy, which I think is a far better film. Green Book is a fine film led by two fantastic performances, has some really powerful emotional scenes, but also has one or two scenes that are a little easy in terms of story-telling and should have been obvious cuts, in my opinion.
I don’t know why they are considering Ali’s performance a supporting role but he’s a lock for winning the Oscar. I was actually much more impressed with Viggo as the main lead. His range and capabilities as a top shelf actor have never been more impressive than here. I couldn’t believe this was the man who played Aragorn of Gondor, or the Russian driver with the heart of gold in Eastern Promises. Most impressive was realizing that he played an East Coast Italian-American in History of Violence and there isn’t one DROP of that character or performance in this role. You’d think there’d be a slip at one point. Astounding.
It’s a good, safe film. Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman is a more challenging film fit for you, while this is a really good one for your mom.
