Ouf… this movie has lots of heart but is dumb as rocks and hard to watch.
For sure there is a movie out there waiting to be made on tinkers (Irish gypsies), but this isn’t it. Instead we have this film, that promotes hitting as a solution to one’s problems. Especially against women.
It’s the story of a 15-year old girl who dreams of boxing and Ali, and is trying to get by living in a tinker camp/community, taking care of her younger brother Patrick, after losing her mom and seeing her dad dragged off to prison for ten years. She’s getting along pretty well but then dad comes back with his antiquated views on women and they decide to take a road trip to see Ali fight in Dublin. All sorts of tomfoolery takes place, most of it pretty unpleasant to watch.
You are naturally rooting for Frances the entire time so that’s when the movie works and Hazel Doupe does a great job interpreting Frances with lots of close-ups of her face. She’s got the chops to be the next Saoirse Ronan and I hope she does, if only because her name is so much easier to pronounce.
An easy one to avoid.
