Anything special I need to know to get going? I know the rules will be in the box, but any gotchas that you guys are aware of?

If you GFI to cross the End Zone line, you will fail.
An AG2 player will intercept your last turn comeback pass to an open receiver.

That said, if you are not doing a league and just playing casually...and don't really care about the Star Players...you'll be fine without them. There are already Skaven and Dwarf teams available and they are fun to play. But the main box is 100% complete if you just want to play one off matches with humans and orks. No need to buy anything else for the casual player.
The team pitches seem to be sort of hard to get. There was a snow one at Christmas but it is gone. There are also a couple of expansion card decks you can get that add more random nonsense. I have the Hall of Fame one and it's pretty neat, worth the $10 or so I paid for it.
There is a referee model of a Halfling eating a giant sandwich. But it's expensive too.

Otherwise, what Barnes said.

Star Players and certainly fun for casual play (and the occasional tourney / league). If the FW prices are too disgusting (IMO - yes), you can always get a third party variant. Often, the third party Star Players look better.
Mr. White can lead the way.
I bought Death Zone 1, and enjoy it for the production values. A majority of the content can be found online via the Living Rulebook.

The cards are fun but totally not essential.

I am not totally sold on the latest edition campaign rules but it is still mostly the game I have grown to love so it's all cool.
If you want to check out our shenanigans you can have a look at our site: www.reginaflatland.bloodbowlleague.com
Cheers,
Michael
