But, you know, it’s Butterfield. Perhaps the single most dependable game designer on the planet.

How often will it get played. Infrequently at best.
MSample, is it like Eclipse? Meaning is it an economic game dressed up as a space 4x game?

2. Speaking of GMT, I was fortunate enough to get in two playtests of the upcoming SPACECORP, This game is played over three eras as you explore the inner solar system, then the outer solar system, then finally launch out to places like Alpha Centauri and build colonies . Players draft cards to build their capabilities like Move, Explore, Build, Research etc and try to not only explore space but fulfill contracts for various goals. This game should be out by next years con I think and I suspect it will be very prominent in open gaming . As you would expect with a John Butterfield design, its an excellent game with some very well thought out ideas. If HIGH FRONTIER as a concept appeals to you, but makes your head hurt, this is right up your alley.

It shares very little with Eclipse. There is no combat for instance.
The Explore component is somewhat similar. The map is known - for instance you know you're going to Alpha Centuari. What you don't know is what you'll find there. Each planet has an Explore # you must play in card values, you then draw a random tile to see what's there. Could be minerals, genetics, etc.
The Tech Tree is handled by your INFRA. This is a dashboard of sorts with slots for three cards. These three cards are baseline values to which you can add to cards played from your hand. For instance, a MOVE 6 card in your INFRA allows you to add 6 to the Move card(s) you play from your hand. Only certain cards can be put into INFRA slots, and doing so is your action for the turn. In the second and third eras, there are Progress Cards gained via advances in Genetics and Science. These are abilities like Radiation Resistance ( shielding ) or Probe Network ( Explore points doubled ).
The economic element is that some planets have minerals that you can take Production Actions to mine giving you money. The VPs are in fact basically $$. There are also Rewards - think Milestones a la Terraforming Mars. For instance, the player who establishes the first base on Mars in the first era gets a $$ bonus.

I'm probably in. Your descriptions sounds fun, msample.
I bet this will sell out immediately. And then be 6 months till GMT can reprint.

Is this JH Butterfield? A buddy of mine has been solo-playing Enemy Action: Ardennes nonstop. He loves it.
He was playing it in "real time" in December. E.g., on Dec 23, 2017, he played the EAA scenario from that same day in '44.
