I definitely think age is a factor, just based on what games were popular at formative times of your life. Not the sole factor, as there are plenty of cube-pushers in their 40s.

Agree.

My thought with F:AT is that most ameritrashers who are younger than us (I'm 36) do Reddit or something like that. So in addition to being an insular community of insiders, I also think that most younger people who love rolling dice and cutthroat games use something different than BGG AND forums.

Also, I'm 36.

I'm 31 and yes, this place does have a "front porch at the old folks' home" vibe at times.

I also agree with Gary that most of the younger people I talk to about games are more likely to use Reddit. It probably doesn't help that BGG looks like something out of the '90s. It's not CSW bad, but damn is BGG fugly.

I’m 36 and I’ve been playing board games for about 10 years. The group I started with was heavily into Ameritrash so maybe that’s why I go into it so much. Though I just remembered we played Catan early on and I thought it was boring.

I did play Warhammer and Warmachine prior to board games, so I’m probably predisposed to direct conflict and chromed out stuff.

Maybe if I’d use reddit if I understood how it worked.

I just turned 35 this week, so I'm still a young 'un. I feel really old at just about every game night, both because I think I'm a good deal older than everyone else there and because I'm bringing games from before 2016.

Time to introduce restricted posting rights for those under 40, they need to log more hours ... and get off our lawn !

That’s right, I am about tired of the youth on this site, what with their bebop and outrageous pants.

32, but my siblings are totally pushing 40. And my parents had kids late, so they're probably older than some of yours. (My dad'll be 79 this year).

Been running a game night at my shop, and the distribution is like... multi-modal. I usually got one kids' table with some young'uns aged 7-10, and then their parents are somewhere, and they're like 40, and then there's the guys who come to play RPGs or MtG on other days that are all in the 18-23 range... except for the ones in that same Starfinder group that are 28-34 probably. A big part of my goal, especially on that wednesday game night is to make soccer moms and kids/teens feel comfortable and wanted.

I got married in December and she came with a 7 year old, so I'm getting older in Dad years. A lot of my college buddies who got married sooner have kids who are younger. I feel like I've matured exponentially in the last 18 months. I can hardly relate to my old (i mean young) friends anymore, especially the unmarried/childless ones.

43 here. I’ve kind of wondered about generational taste for games. We all scoff at the BGG stereotype of pontificating about the “elegance” of the latest passive aggressive puzzle game. But when I was a kid, there was only one elegant game to choose from: chess. Chess was okay but kind of boring. (And of course it’s not passive-aggressive.)

I wanted knights and barbarians and dragons and stuff. Basically as soon as I saw the Elmore cover of the Red box, it was everything I’d ever wanted. When my parents banned it due to Satan, that just made me want it more.

My family got an Atari 2600 in 1979. It was fun, and I loved arcade games too, but they never had as much fun or promise as D&D. Other than a Street Fighter phase, video games have never been much more than time-wasters for me.

It also helps that I’m not super-competitive. I don’t especially care if I lose as long as the game was fun. So losing due to a bad die roll doesn’t bother me the way it would some hyper-analytical must-win player.

I've definitely seen young Ameritrashers. People who come through D&D will most assuredly prefer this style of game. There's huge overlap with that, Betrayal, and some of the Fantasy Flight/DC deckbuildy stuff. When it comes to magic players, it depends more on which of those 3 archetypes people fall into. Spikes and obsessive collectors gotta get every new brainburnin' feld.
