I don't think I own any of their stuff, but end of an era for sure - from a post on their Facebook page:

"As of today, the management team at Mayfair Games, Inc. announces we will wind down game publishing. After 36 years, this was not an easy decision or one we took lightly, but it was necessary. Once we had come to this conclusion, we knew we had to find a good home for our games which is when we reached out to Asmodee.

We are pleased to announce that we have sold our games to Asmodee North America, who have acquired all the assets of Mayfair Games, Inc. This acquisition includes the product line for both Mayfair Games, Inc and Lookout Games, GmbH.

We would like to take a moment to say - Thank You!
Thank you to the many retailers, reviewers, customers, industry partners, and volunteers, who made us a success over the past 36 years! You helped bring our games to game stores and cafes, conventions, libraries, schools, kitchen tables, backyard patios, family vacations, and more... where thousands of fans have been introduced to this great world of board gaming. Thank you!!"

I am sure the conspiracy theorists on BGG are tearing their hair out.

You have no Mayfair Games stuff? CATAN? MODERN ART? TIGRIS & EUPHRATES? Dang, they were one of the first to bring this stuff over here.

Well, that sucks.

Mayfair games were produced in the US. I don't know anything about Asmodee's operation. Will US production on these titles still continue or is it time to go collect all those crayon rail titles?

They have fallen behind the times in a lot of ways (and have been behind them for the past 10-15 years), but Mayfair remains one of the most important imprints in the hobby. Let’s not forget that Jay Tummelson started out with Mayfair and was in fact instrumental in bringing Settlers to the US before he left to start Rio Grande Games.

Predictions:

3Q2018- BGG announces sale to Asmodee
4Q2019- “boardgaming hobby” renamed “Asmodee Hobby”.
Sometime in 2020- due to clerical error, Asmodee inadvertantly purchases Asmodee.

Asmodee North America took over Fantasy Flight's headquarters in Roseville and has been hiring like crazy by industry standards. They currently have 16 job openings, including sales/marketing, graphic design, and accounting. I am guessing that they bought Mayfair and Lookout so they could sell more games.

At what point does Games Workshop actually turn into the hobby underdog?

I don't follow this stuff super closely but it seems like we're down to Hasbro, GW and Asmodee. Who else is there now? Is Rio Grande still independent?

But GW isn't nearly as big as Hasbro or Asmodee. They don't have titles in department stores and are really just one brand.

I feel like GW is more like old TSR and not even WotC (which had a bunch of brands - D&D, MAgic, Etc...but even they are now part of Hasbro, no?)

In this case, GW is a dwarf between the other two giants.

You're leaving out a fair number of wargame publishers, but they're marketing to a different crowd. Don't know if Asmodee is looking to go that way.

Plus 10,000 publisher wannabees that have created an ID on kickstarter.

I suppose it doesn't matter, but it's just kind of depressing. It used to be these were regular joes and you felt like you were part of an adventure. Now you're buying from Walmart. At least I won't mind the counterfeiting as much.

Derp, totally forgot about GMT and the like. Hex and counter was never really my style. I guess CMON too, if we're talking about the type of company that's occupying any sort of substantial shelf space in the FLGS around here

Ouch. That's depressing when you think about it like that.

Not that it isn't already depressing.

But, to play devil's advocate, it's not like Mayfair has been doing much in 5+ years. I recall buying the downfall of Pompeii 8 years ago, and that was the last relevant title I heard of.

The 80's and 90's we're great for them.

They milked Catan (rightfully so) then sold it to FFG. What else is in their catalog that makes them relevant?

I never really got into German Euros. I walked out on a friend trying to teach Princes of Florence. I did play T&E once years ago and while I didn't hate it, it never caught on. For non wargame fare, I tend towards AT and less abstract Euros.

Not sure, but it was never as bad as minimum wage. During my brief stint as a warehouse monkey for FFG, the pay was low but still somewhat better than minimum wage, plus they had a 75% employee discount. My girlfriend applied for a job in their marketing department last fall, but didn't make it past the phone interview stage. They (ok, Asmodee North America) even have an actual HR employee now.

I posted a couple of pictures here back when FFG moved into their new headquarters/event center. It's massive. This picture shows half of their facility, including the event center section down at the far right end. I assume that most of the space shown is being used as warehouse space. The HQ is on the other side of the parking lot, and had similar warehouse space on either side, except for a small unrelated auto parts store at one end.
