Sonar versus Captain Sonar

I had all plans to hold out and pick up a copy of Captain Sonar when a cheap, used one crossed my path. However, last week I had the chance to trade for Sonar and, screw it, I want to play now when it is cold and horrible out. And, while having some truly epic games of Captain Sonar, I know I won't have the prime player count to get it out on a regular basis.
In short, I do not regret this AT ALL. And I'm not even sure I miss the other roles. It always seemed like at least one person was disgruntled being saddled with a role they didn't like. Tell me what ya think. (And, yes, I am aware of the ease of converting Captain to this simpler version of Sonar, which is why CS was on my list ahead of Sonar).

OH! So that's what SONAR is. Makes sense. Two of the roles in CS were kinda bogus. Now, what the heck is SONAR FAMILY?

Sonar family is Sonar. I think target had a one year exclusive as Sonar and Matagot then released it as Sonar family

Whoops, my bad. There are a few changes from Sonar to Sonar Family (or family sonar).
Changes:
* Maps are not straight quadrants.
* Map 2: North Pole has variant surfacing rules (can only surface in certain breaks in the ice to not take 1 damage).
* Added a section for real-time play, which only really adds the requirement of having 4 players, and actions other than Navigate require the Captain to yell "Stop" to pause the action.
* Different art, including a slightly better laid out captain actions.

My big problem with Sonar is not the role reduction, but the fact that it's turn based. The magic of Captain Sonar is in the real-time chaos and tense breathing as you look back and forth with your radio operator, demanding information while on the clock.

The couple of times that I played Captain Sonar 2 player, turn based, it was very enjoyable. Definitely not the main event, but I wouldn't turn it down, necessarily.

I'm going to try the real time "family version" rules listed above this weekend and see how it fares.
