I just picked up Goldland for $30 shipped, first edition, the description said "includes English rules translation." Presumably this is a German print of the game? Is there anything besides the English rules that I need to dip into this critter?

Love this one. I don't think there ever was an English version of Goldland. The game is totally language independent, So you don't need anything other than the translated rules.

Oh yeah, this was a really fun Kramer game from the golden age of German games. It never reprinted, the only version I know of is the big ol’ Goldsieber edition in German.

I've been looking at it for years. I found a copy for $30 delivered and figured it was time.

At one time it was fairly expensive- in the $75-$100 range. But times being what they are...

Goldland is a very good game and it's in my top 100.

Although designed by Kramer and released by Goldsieber, it feels more like an American game from the 70s or 80s. That is, the mechanisms are closely tied to the events they're depicting. It's not quite as arbitrary or capricious as games of that era, but it generates "stories" better than most German-style games.

BTW Sag, remember in another thread you were joking that I picked Careers on my turn to choose a game. Actually I picked Goldland.

It's great to hear all the sterling endorsements. Now I just have to find the time to play the damn thing!

So halfway there, I read the rules last night. It was a translation from 2002 on BGG, which is more or less ancient history. Almost like I was exploring an old forgotten part of the gaming world.

Really dead-simple, and there's a playthrough and an FAQ all built in. The copy I received has five copies of the rules, five copies of the quick-ref and one copy of the FAQ included. Everything else is jumbled in the box so some baggies will have to enter the scene. But I think you're all right, there's an ancient aspect to this game, old fashioned in play style and old fashioned in thematic elements as well. Natives, a puma, things like that hearken back to the 70s and 80s, or likely more precisely from a late 90s view of the new world that someone from Germany would have.
