Sad to report that the author of the Lone Wolf gamebooks has passed away age 60, after a long on-and-off battle with illness. His final flight from the dark. Another big bit of gravel in 2016's sad sandal.

Seems a good time to remember that he was once kind enough to do an interview with the fort.

And that he was a good enough soul to make his books available for anyone to play online for free.

Probably my favorite book series ever. That's very sad to hear.

Terrible news and 60 is far too young. Last I was checking in on him, via fb this summer, spirits seemed high. I didn't realize he had fallen I'll.
Never having read a Lone Wolf book is, imo, the one major gap in my gaming experience. After finishing these Dark Future books, I had planned to tackle a few. Maybe I'll bump them up in the schedule.
EDIT: thanks for the FAT interview link. great job!

Bummer. His books were my step up from the FF gamebooks. I even like the Lone Wolf game on the Xbox.

In the interview with Matt, Joe mentioned a Lone Wolf 3DS game. Did that ever happen or was it this:

Speaking of, has anyone ever played the above? How do you get it on the DS...simply go to the site and hit the download link?
Aren't there some other Lone Wolf video games floating around?

Terrible news. He had tumors removed from his kidneys about 10-12 years ago and recovered admirably. I wonder if the complications from his last surgery might be linked to that previous health problem.
There's a free app on iTunes, although you only get the first part of the story and must pay for the next. Started playing it a couple of months ago, then got distracted by something else and never went back - I king of forgot about it actually. The system was interesting nevertheless, and it played like a gamebook with animation, you were flipping pages and making choices. Combat was pretty brutal and involved as well.

I was in the 7th grade when the Lone Wolf books came out. My friends and I rotated them around amongst ourselves. Our english teacher would set aside several hours a week for "personal reading time", most likely because it was a far easier way to earn a paycheck than teaching children. We would bust out our Lone Wolf books in lieu of The Oxbow Incident or Red Badge of Courage. The first time we did it, we got in trouble for playing a game rather than reading a "proper" book. Guess Miss McDermott didn't appreciate the sound of those d6's hitting the desk while she was scrapbooking her Little River Band ticket stubs. It didn't take long before we were drawing numbers on strips of paper we hid under our Pee-Chees, polishing our Kai disciplines, and cursing the decision to take bo staff over tracking.
Good times. Thanks Joe, last of the Grand Masters.

Dammit. He was a good author, too.
