I opened my copy of 1856 today and noticed damage to the crease, probably caused by me folding it the wrong way or too forcibly. Here's a pic:
Note that the crease itself is fine, what is damaged is the paper on top.
Anyone has experience fixing boards like this? Any tips? I heard about book mending paper but I'm not sure if it would work on a coloured board like this one.

Use thin packing tape on both sides. Make VERY sure that when you apply it, you go from one side of the crack, across the crack or you will make it too tight and not able to bend. Basically, follow the contour of the board and use a paintbrush to push the tape down into the sag.

hmm... that would be quite difficult...
I'd try a flexible glue, but would practice on it something else first. Also make sure the back is strong. Add bookbinding tape if necessary. Then once the glue set, paint the remaining whites (from the rip) thinly.

I'd second Sevej in using book repair glue or bookbinding tape (Scotch 845 book tape) rather than packing tape. Book tape won't turn yellow and peel away like packing tape.
