How about a F:AT IRC channel?

I spend all of my workday in an IRC channel on a private server with bunch of my local friends from the car scene. It's a great way to pass the time and have a few laughs.

Has anyone considered such a thing for F:AT? I have no suggestions on where to park such a channel, nor do I know if anyone would actually use it...but I thought I'd throw the idea out there.

IRC is kind of a relic these days, so maybe I'm the only one here still using it.

I used IRC a lot about 10 years ago... are there decent clients available? I wonder if we could host some kind of web based chat on the site, or would that kill the bandwidth?

Interesting idea.

Oh there are scads of IRC clients, that really isn't an issue. I use Chatzilla at home just because it's a simple Firefox plugin. At work they block virtually every outbound port imaginable, so I use mibbit.com to connect to our IRC server through port 80. It's just running on a friend's colo Linux box down in Texas.

I don't run any websites so I've never set up a web-based chat thing, but my experience using them has been that they mostly suck (especially BGG's, which is heinous).

I haven't used IRC for about 10 years as well, but I'd give it a try again for the awesomeness that would be F:AT:IRC.

UPDATE:

I have permission from my friend in Texas to start a channel on his IRC server. Any preferences about the name of the channel?

#ameritrash
#fortress

etc?

OK, I just started a channel on nullpacket.net (listening on ports 6000, 6667, and 8080), the channel is:

#ameritrash

I'll keep an eye out for anyone wandering in.
