Gamer Hierarchies and the Great Ordning

I pretty much don't talk about my hobby at all outside of who I game with and my family. Why? Because I figure no one cares, just like I don't give a shit about anyone else's fancy bicycle, or expensive golf clubs, or new boat, or meat smoker, etc. (though I will politely listen to them talk about it and ask questions when appropriate).

I might tangentially mention that I game with people if it comes up ("This guy I game with recently won the lottery..."), but I'm never going to go into more detail unless asked. I suppose if someone ever asks me what games I play I'll probably just tell them that they're complicated and expensive.

And FWIW, the difference between Blood Bowl players and fantasy football players is that one group devotes entirely too much time and emotional investment to their imaginary team while bothering everyone within earshot with woeful tales of last week's bad beat, and the other group plays Blood Bowl.

I want to mention that I haven't shaved in three months and my neckbeard game is on fleek.

When I go to conventions, I just tell coworkers " Went to visit some friends in ( insert convention city name ) . Saves a lot of explaining.

I just tell them I'm going to a nerd festival for games and booze. That always ends the conversation. Pretty much everyone I know knows I'm eclectic in the things I do so very few people ask questions anymore.

JonJacob nailed it: staging and hierarchy is a built-in. It's just something we do.

That said:

There are game styles I don't like. Engaged in conversation I'm willing to throw my opinion out there. But I'm not such a pious ass that I lurk the shadows waiting to rank things and shit on things other people like.

Except when I do. Because endless expansions and required stuff that doesn't come in the box (apps!) are bad and if you like them you are also bad and should feel bad. But these are just facts, there's really not anything to discuss there.

It can go both ways though.

Remind me when I say out loud in a 40k community that 40k doesn't handle suppression at all (their "morale/leadership" rules only handle routing), then one member said I'm wrong because I've never been in under fire. I don't even bother asking back.

It's a non-Einsteinian space in which every single point is somehow worse than every other point. In a single day you can hear nerds giving themselves three cheers for being so intellectually curious and open minded and then hear them upset because Domino being black now is "too different" despite absolutely no one giving a shit about black OR white Domino for 30 years.

100%. Every group of gamers finds some reason to think that they're above the others, so it's really a loop, or some giant inscribed polygonal rock-paper-scissoresque thing.

I also think it's funny how playing enough magic or world of warcraft means you effectively speak another language that most people won't understand. It's Klingon with a game attached.

This has just been percolating in my mind a lot more lately since I've A) Opened a game store, and B) Tried to explain it to everyone from landlords, former co-workers, friends, family, etc.
