Let's Talk About Gaslands

Steve just play with cars non-modded. Buy cool looking ones from the package = good to go. There is no WYSIWYG rules, I just do the modeling because right now I find it fun.

Also I'm building the ultimate Gaslands terrain board so when it gets done all Michigan FATies (TWBGers) have no excuse to come play. If I get a chance I'll post up my just finished building - not yet painted monster truck tonight or tomorrow. Very happy with it!

I have played a few times and just have cars right out of the packaging. If I’m going to paint, it will be for Frostgrave.

I decided to purge my X-Wing stuff since 2.0 is coming out and go with this. I picked up some great Star Wars cars and am ready to start modding. My LGS has a bits bin so maybe I can find some things in there.

The rules look fairly easy. I want to make a nice player aid as that will help my wife want to play. She loved the Star Wars cars so we're already half way there.

I recently tried Gaslands. It was easy to learn and easy to play, and moved along at a good pace. The gear rules make this a better game than Car Wars for race scenarios. But Car Wars is the more interesting game in terms of designing vehicles and engaging in tactical combat. However, Car Wars sacrifices both playability and pacing to obtain that level of engagement. If you like war games, you will probably like Car Wars more than Gaslands. If you like light miniature games, you will probably enjoy Gaslands more than Car Wars.

Although I liked designing the vehicles in Car Wars, playing around with combinations of Driver Perks, Vehicle Perks, and Weapons, make for some decent strategery.

I finally finished my war rig. It’s an homage to my dad’s model train hobby which is probably where my fascination with building stuff like this comes from.

Finally took a picture of my non-painted monster truck, I have since bent the exhausts to the proper position. Trying to figure out color scheme. I also just bought all the materials and have playtested my 4 x 4 board I'm going to start building for this. Updates when my lazy ass takes camera out for photos.

So I went into the games shop to pick up some paints and I had my son with me. Some guys were playing Gaslands. River watched for a few minutes and asked about the miniatures. I told him about sticking weapon pieces onto Hot Wheels. I just found this in his room, an old LEGO case. The rolled up paper was the pictured plans.

Awesome. Waiting a year or two then I think my son will eat it up!

My wife and I played our first game yesterday. We kept it simple: Two normal cars with front-mounted machine guns in a deathrace. It was fantastic. Her Chewbacca car wiped out around the first gate and was miles behind, only to eventually win. At one point, she realized her Han Solo car was out of the running so she said screw it, skipped a gate, and focused on destroying my guys from behind.

The rules are clean and flow nicely. The game is easy and yet there are choices to be made about how hard you push things. My favorite moment was when I was coming into a turn way too hot and I needed to Slide or I'd be screwed for the next turn. I made the slide and kept all that momentum...until I wiped out and flipped right into another car. That's pretty awesome.
