I have to ask, though--SaMoKo wrote: Watched Eighth Grade because it was a dollar rental on iTunes.
Trash.
Nothing happened. I was hoping it was a build up to the girl being murdered like some messed up found footage film where they pull her out of a trash compactor. Just to see something, ANYTHING, happen.
You picked up a low-budget, independent film by a first-time director starring a first-time teenage actress, titled "Eighth Grade."
What were you expecting? Car chases and alien invasions?

Yikes. I retract my snark. There's no way I would describe that as a comedy.SaMoKo wrote: It was listed as a comedy so I expected a comedy lol

Ya, if it was listed as a drama and I felt like that sort of movie, I may have enjoyed it. But the genre seemed to make sense with the blurb of the misadventures of an awkward 8th grader, and it was reviewed well, so lol.
Renter beware!

I'll say 2 nice things. Ethan Hawke does a fine job. He always does, though, so that's not noteworthy. Second, the movie goes in a direction you will not expect. Always appreciated.
Unfortunately, neither of those things save this movie from being heavy-handed and fairly drab.
In short, don't watch this film. Do something else with your 2 hours.

Yes, that might be the best time travel movie I have seen.

Finally(?) did see Minding the Gap on Hulu after having missed it when it came around this summer. I'd been initially reluctant because of the ostensible skater content, which is of no particular interest to me, and the largely genuine impression that the movie was about teen/early adult aimlessness, which I'm treated to enough of in real life, but the documentary transcends these matters and coalesces about halfway through into a tough experience worth sharing with the subjects and director.
It's probably excessive to call Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse transformative, but it certainly breathes some new life and pumps some fresh air into the increasingly weighty and weighted down superhero genre and makes me wonder whether this stuff shouldn't all be animated.

I started ANNIHILATION as well. I am digging it. The book is very weird, and that is my bag. This is what I think an alien interaction would be like, honestly. I can't believe we would have enough in common to communicate in any kind of way other than occupying the same physical space from time to time.
