There's not a chance that John Mayer has an album as good as Abigail under his belt. He's obviously a gifted guitar player, but his original music stinks.

I dunno, I look at King Diamond like guys who grew up listening to Metallica and Megadeth and wishing they were as good as Dave Mustaine.

And they didn’t ever get there.

Also, Mayer never wrote a hook as good as “Abigail, you are to be reborn when you die OOOOOH OOOOH OOH OOH”.

King Diamond is not a subpar Metallica follower (like Megadeth for example), he was a contemporary. In fact, his work with Mercyful Fate was very influential in Metalica’s formative years- especially since one of the key innovations they brought to metal was some of the Eurometal sound at the time.

Which was, ironically given their later anti-music sharing stance, chiefly imported via tape trading.

I don't even like John Mayer's material. But he's an incredibly technically skilled guitarist, and I think that surprises most people.

King Diamond...I mean, they can play but beyond Kim’s badass falsetto and Jamaican Mr Brown face paint...their tone isn’t particularly special or different. He uses a fucking Line 6 amp. It literally cannot get more vanilla. Randy Rhoads and about a million other players (including John Mayer) are far more skilled. Even in his genre guys are better than his guitarist (Andre I think?).

They have a unique sound to be sure but the reason 90% of everyone knows Metallica and Megadeth and Slayer and Pantera (well, there was that murder) and Anthrax and a hundred other bands and not them is that they aren’t super special. I don’t judge Grammys as much but it’s worth noting that MF and KD have been nominated once....and Mayer has 19 nominations and five wins. One might argue that they’re too niche or something but the fact remains that beyond the lead singer’s voice and their interesting lyrics and arrangements, from a technical standpoint, there’s Kim and whatever decent band is behind him. They aren’t John Mayer.

We could argue all day about his songs and whatnot, “mom pop” or whatever, but if you watch him live and see the improvisation and bad ass guitar playing, you would immediately see that he is a man who is, from a skill standpoint, unfuckablewith

Until Imagine Dragons came along, there was no one is current pop music who I detested more than John Mayer. Skilled player he may be, but the guy could sigh into the mic and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. That whispery mouth full of marbles delivery is the fucking worst to begin with, pair it with his shit songwriting and I might be willing to trade all good music just for him to not exist.

Subjectively, yes, I’m sure you feel that way. But there’s tens of millions of people who feel that Drake and the cadre of mumblerappers out there are the bee’s knees.

TLDR: I don’t understand the need to shit on things you don’t like instead of simply saying you don’t like them.
