I haven’t seen it yet and am avoiding spoilers but the negative comments are hilarious.

Force Awakens- meh, it’s too much like Star Wars!

Last Jedi- meh, it’s not like Force Awakens!

I’ve definitely moved past my initial disappointment that so many didn’t see the same hugely entertaining film that I did. It’s now like the end of Mass Effect trilogy all over again where I just sit back and once again watch all the reason why fandom is so problematic.

SPOILERS BELOW (though I'll try to be broad)
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

I can't wait to see it again. I loved a lot of it, and came away very satisfied. But I don't understand the extremes I'm hearing; both from those who are pooh-poohing it, and those calling it the best Star Wars movie ever. I'm hearing more of the latter than the former, and I can't go there.

It does have some amazing moments and implications, and some cool meta messages to it. Last Jedi seems to take the reintroduction to the mythology that Force Awakens brought and say, let's go a step further and build it anew. Burn that old religion. I'm not sure that will ever be realized completely, but this does try to move in that direction, which is admirable. In that sense, this film is kind of a middle-finger to the other "saga" stories like the Han Solo, Obi-Wan films in the works. As if those are now classic rock cover bands to what Johnson is envisioning for the future of the franchise. And the ending builds on that idea and connects the great impact of the whole series in a beautiful way, and also reminded me of when I was 8 years-old and this story and its characters captivated me. It wasn't enough that it was a movie... I wanted to be part of it, and it instilled some real wonder in me and my friends and millions around the world.

But then, there are some clunky or weaker aspects to it, as a film. I don't want to make too much of them, but I do think that in terms of dialogue, pacing, and humor, Abrams had that a little more consistently good with TFA. And I'm almost to the point of thinking that the idea of every SW film having some kind of "cantina" scene needs to be nixed. It was clever that this turned out to be a different kind of scum and villainy, but it still felt unnecessary and unreal. That whole extended sequence, really. And some of the other scenes, especially in the first half, were okay, but serviceable. Inasmuch as they connected to bigger payoffs later (esp. Luke, Rey, Kylo), that was fine.

I'm mixed about the meta stuff relating to some of the lingering questions... who are Rey's parents, who is Snoke, etc. The way those things were dealt with was interesting, but also felt like a bit of a cop out. I wonder if Rian Johnson and J.J. Abrams colluded (you would think so, when they're supposed to be making a trilogy), or if Johnson responded to Abrams with this film, which is kind of how it seems. In which case, that makes the next one a very big question mark.

Visually, some outstanding work again. Toss up between this and TFA as far as that goes. And no bad CGI characters like with Rogue One. So that's good. As its own part of this current trilogy, it was great, but it really makes me look more forward to what Rian Johnson will do with a brand new trilogy that has no connection at all to the Skywalker saga. Will the public at large be interested in that, though, I wonder?

I thought it was decent, I really need to see it again. Some of my thoughts, in no particular order:

1. The dicotomy of Finn and Rose complaining about how poorly the 1% treat their workers paired with Chewie killing and cooking Porgs and Rey trashing the island, making the caretakers clean up after her messes. Deliberate? Accidental?

2. BB-8 is the ultimate mary sue. But I like BB-8 so I don't care.

3. As a white male seeing how female and diverse the Rebellion is made me vaguely defensive. Other than Luke I don't think there is a single white good guy, maybe a bearded pilot. The Rebellion leadership is extremely female. So I'm not sure if I'm unnecessarily harsh in judging their actions, since it was that way even in the OT to some extent. But I thought Leia and posh-General made some bad calls in their "plan" that drove the mutiny that ended up getting most of the rebellion killed off. More likely this is how women and minorities feel in like every other movie so I'll just shut up and revel in the sensation.

4.Using a cap ship as a lightspeed missile seems too obvious a tactic to be allowable, heck, they could have one-shotted the damned Death Star with that tactic.

Oh yeah, how THE FUCK did they miss a chance for a Lando Calrissian cameo in the casino????????? And those gold dice, totally showing up in the Solo prequel movie...

Jeez the spoilers in this are starting to get rough. Good points and everything but there’s plot points and surprises getting casually thrown in

I just hope all the bad guys still have English accents

Barney, it's a thread called "The Last Jedi," started the day it opened. Just stay out until you see it.

I think that since TFA this trilogy is definitely feminist. Remember how when Rey met Finn for the first time she kept rejecting Finn's "help".

Well, since some of you have seen it, I have only 1 important takeaway from TLJ: I really, really like the character development on Rey & Kylo. Rey is the perfect heroine story. And Kylo is awesome without being Vader. Their connection & dynamics is very unique. Not only we have heroes lured to the dark side, but also villains drawn to the light side.

I have to say I've never been in SW fandom, but I'm all in for the new SWs.

I think I was right when before I saw it I wondered whether at 48 it wasn't time for me to put my childhood away. There's some well-done elements in here, and many of the problems I had with it were seeds in TFA that simply bloomed here, but there's just about enough material in this fictional universe for two and a half good movies, and we're now at eight (or nine).

Edit: I'm not really trying to suggest that TLJ ruined my childhood or that I'm upset about what happened to this character or that. And I think I'm seeing better what the aim was. I'm just not sure I need to see this out.

Just saw last night. Liked it but it wasn’t the best. As a “chase/race against time” film it was pretty decent.

Problems:
- The first act was rife with dumb humor that didn’t work some of the time.
- The end was dark, but the beginning was Ewok/level light. It was a dark film and should’ve been a dark film.
- People’s blood boils in space due to vacuum. Force or no force.

As soon as Luke showed up on Krait I knew something was off. He looked way younger. The beard and hair weren’t right.

That’s all I’ve got to say.

I saw it last night and loved it, but I feel a bit like I am in the minority with that. But then I hated the new Blade Runner whereas many fans loved it. I loved the "this is not your Star Wars" vibe but I can see why that put many people off.

Not true. I have read many theories over my lifetime as to what happens to a body in a vacuum and there is no consensus because it has never happened. Most recent theories seem to indicate that it is survivable and the scene in 2001 is the most accurate and that is consistent with TLJ.

I just got back! I thought it was great fun, and was all giddy, then my wife slagged on it during the drive home and deflated my initial enthusiasm.

Heart: 8.5 (it's a good Star Wars movie, but it's not Casablanca) It had some hugely satisfying moments

Brain: 6.5-7. Not sure. My wife pointed out that it has none of the charisma found in the actors in the first Star Wars. However, I think Mini-Vader and Mini-Leia are getting better with each movie.

The real question, is where does this movie sit in relation to the Marvel Universe movies? Better than some? Worse than all?

Warning: Spoiler!

I’m seeing die hard SW fans refuse to consider R1 a Star Wars movie because it’s fan made.

Man, that’s a low brain rating. That worries me :(

I know...I know... I’m not supposed to be in this thread
