-no one had body marking, since it was raining too hard for the sharpies to mark.
-transition was a mudpit
-swim was delayed 30 minutes for lightning
-got to wait another hour shivering (even in wetsuit!) for the faster swimmers to wave start.
-sucked a lot of water due to the storm chop
-got nasty lake in my sinuses and paid for it for the next 2 days
-paid the price in speed and soreness for this being the 3rd swim I've done in the past 9 months.
-sunglasses literally fogged up every minute on the bike
-got to run a half marathon with mud in my socks. got some nice blisters from that one.
-had to take a massive dump 1 mile into the run that took 4 minutes off my time.

I've heard about some of these kinds of hassles with respect to triathalons and marathons, and it made me wonder about the point of participating in these events. I'm a fitness freak, but I work out on my own. Due to aging knees, I don't run much anymore, but I still lift regularly, and sometimes swim laps. I swim and/or lift until I'm tired, or if I'm short on time, I still have a minimum number of laps or reps that I complete. Since my teens, I have never felt the need to compete in an event that involved a bunch of standing around or waiting on other people or suffering environmental hassles like mud or rain. The idea of competing with hundreds or thousands of people feels abstract unless I actually thought I had a shot at winning.

I like the massive dump part. It has all sorts of The Long Walk in there

Good on ya, brother! My brother Rob does triathlons. He’s one of those ultra-driven guys who lives for competition. He’s a top contender in Oregon and thereabouts. I can’t even imagine doing that sort of thing. I’d like to do a Spartan just to live the American Ninja Warrior dream, though. Just once.

My idea of a triathlon is one bourbon, one scotch, and one beer :)

for sure. Last year in Door County we had a small craft advisory and 4 foot swells. They did cut the swim down from 1.2 miles to 400 meters, but I've never been so sure I was going to drown in my life. Especially since I only breath to the side that the waves were crashing from.

And of course, I'm doing it again this coming weekend. Hopefully the weather behaves!

Best of luck TK!

My version of a trialthon is a sleep followed by two presses of the snooze button

For me, it is mainly about bettering my time each event I compete it. I use 'compete' in the loosest meaning as I don't have a shot against 90% of the people out there. I do run in the Clydesdale 40+ class where I can compete against other heavy, old dudes. I am still in the back of the pack, but getting better. The Tri community seems to be populated with cool people. I don't think I'll ever get into a training group with them, since group training really isn't my bag. Also, some of the dudes get waaaay too over the top with their biking and that is a turn off. It is fun to train at the gym and at home, then put together what I've done in an open field.

I did a Spartan sprint a couple years ago and would like to try again now that I've lost some weight and gained muscle.

I highly doubt I will purchase a wetsuit in the near future, but I think a proper road bike rather than a mountain bike would be useful. I get passed easily on the mountain bike and don't care for it. Aero bars for my current bike first though. Small steps.

Yeah, it's mostly about competing against myself. And a competitive event makes me work a lot harder than I ever would on my own.

Plus, Type 2 fun is the best kind of fun

Great job. Not just on the races but on the training! It takes discipline!

I came home to a rather incredible present from my wife last night:

Masi Inizio

She even picked up the aero bars.

I'm getting it fitted today and picking up pedals and shoes.

I will finally be able to say 'on the left' during the biking leg.
