I visited Camas, WA outside of Portland for a long weekend in April. We packed a lot in. I could have skipped Portland altogether to spend more time at Mt Hood and Hood River Gorge. I did some running and skiing and drank really good beer. Had my first CBD gummy as well (game changer). I know you can get it anywhere but there CBD is nbd while here at home people don’t even know about it.

Anyway, my buddy wanted to visit Portland so we went and I gotta say... I don’t get it. It was like a crowded hipster theme park. People were nice enough and everything but there was no edge or anything that felt super “authentic.” Maybe a single day of food truck food, the Sunday market and the Deschuttes brewery doesn’t truly capture the specialness. So maybe I just want to live in the PNW?

I've lived in the Portland area for about 12 years now, and I generally love the area. We have forests, beaches, rivers, mountains/volcanoes, waterfalls, et cetera, all pretty close. However, most of the people here are insufferable. You learn to live with it, and stay out of Portland proper unless you need something.

Unless you are a socialist hipster, it's not special.

I wouldn't even call it "socialist hipster". More like "rich hipster presenting as socialist".

The most accurate thing to me was a friend of mine describing Portland as "where young people go to retire".

I lived in Portland, Salem, and Newport area. I found that outside of Portland there’s really only a few jobs: work for the state or collect from it.

People there are fucking weird. Portland is a sort of hippie weird but the rest of the state is like “I don’t know you nor do I wish to” weird. Even the rural areas are very “good old boys club” kind of areas.

The drugs were of excellent quality, so I could overlook a lot.

That is said in the initial episode of Portlandia.

Yup. Oregon is a blue state almost entirely due to Portland.

You shut your mouth you, a goddamned cornfield should have just as much say in an election as a populous city of millions of people.

Fucking city elitists with all their people and whatnot

From my experience, that's not quite accurate.

Mind you, I haven't lived in Oregon since '92, and I was always a southern Oregonian in the area between Ashland and Medford, mostly.

But the conservatives I encountered would always say stuff like "You must be from Ashland" which is a progressive town due to a nearby college and all the social trappings that follow with that.

I believe being stuck between San Francisco and Seattle is the reason why you have liberalism in Oregon, besides the natural wonder that makes it hard for conservatives to want to kill anything other than Spotted Owls because "We gotta harvest all logs that we can find. God'll make more... Someday."

As for good ol' boy syndrome of Oregon... Maybe? I dunno, but I've experienced far worse in other states.

Maybe Pete was just around more conservatives than usual?

I just never had that problem in my experience, but I could see that being true in some areas.

Son of a bitch. Having never watched the show, I didn't know he was quoting. Bastard.

If you get east of the mountains in Oregon you're basically in a huge West Idaho, for all that entails. The state overall (like the Western US in general) is a few blue high-concentration dots in a vast sea of red emptiness.

(also, Voodoo Doughnuts is total bullshit. Blue Star are way better.)
