Frohike has replaced Mad Dog, due to his gross abuse of power.

I was not in Portland on Aug. 1st.

However, the one time I was in Portland, I have to say that I really enjoyed the train system (I live near Detroit; we don't really do public transportation), the Japanese Garden (except the part where, in the most serene section of it, the rock garden, people couldn't stop yelling into their fucking phones for 5 seconds), and the Chinese garden. I could live there just for those things, I think, but I've always been a huge Japanese garden fan and have aspired to build one in my backyard for years, except that I keep spending money on stupid pieces of cardboard and plastic...

Yup. Oregon is a blue state almost entirely due to Portland.

From my experience, that's not quite accurate.

Mind you, I haven't lived in Oregon since '92, and I was always a southern Oregonian in the area between Ashland and Medford, mostly.

But the conservatives I encountered would always say stuff like "You must be from Ashland" which is a progressive town due to a nearby college and all the social trappings that follow with that.

I believe being stuck between San Francisco and Seattle is the reason why you have liberalism in Oregon, besides the natural wonder that makes it hard for conservatives to want to kill anything other than Spotted Owls because "We gotta harvest all logs that we can find. God'll make more... Someday."

As for good ol' boy syndrome of Oregon... Maybe? I dunno, but I've experienced far worse in other states.

Maybe Pete was just around more conservatives than usual?

I just never had that problem in my experience, but I could see that being true in some areas.

You misunderstand....not everything is political, man.

I mean that people are insular. They don’t particularly care to get to know you, nor want you to know them. If you are an import you’re viewed as an outsider and treated as such. That was more Salem than Newport area. Think “Seattle Freeze” on a more nonchalant scale.

I was there 94-96ish.

Sorry Pete, I knew that would be misconstrued. And I should have not left it open to ambiguity.

It wasn't political at all. Not even a jab. Conservatives in Oregon tend to be far more insular than liberals. I'm just going by my own observations of living there for a quarter of my life.

Oh, it’s all good, brother. I never really care about people’s politics, the people were just who they were.

The Jews at the MCC in Beaverton were amazing tho. Super kind and friendly. Best group of folks I met the whole time I was there.

Beaverton sounds like a nice place.

Anyone notice that Frohike has an absolutely obscene thank-you-to-post ratio?

Everything he posts is measured and thoughtful. He blesses us with his insight.

He's like the opposite of Black Barney.
