Thrower's Tallies: Top Horror Games

I have an uneasy relationship with horror. Perhaps that's appropriate. To me, there's a clear dividing line between the chilling supernatural and gruesome gorefests. I detest the latter, and love the former. To have a book, film or video game slowly convince me there are mysterious shades flitting beyond the veil of night is a special pleasure.

I think you just put your finger on why I don't much care for Eldritch Horror but love Arkham Horror. I've been trying to understand it myself, under pressure from so many people telling me how much Eldritch Horror rocks. I think it lacks a certain RPG feel. The characters are just too interchangeable. I never feel really invested in my investigator; or that they are learning and developing; or that they have a specific role to play on the team. What you do on your turn in Eldritch Horror is most often dictated by proximity, while what you do in Arkham Horror is most often dictated by your character's skill set.

I like to think Arkham Horror is all about individual character stories generated by the game, Eldritch Horror abandons that and is an overall narrative story about saving the world.

You're right on Arkham having that RPG feel that Eldritch doesn't, though I'd say that Eldritch functioning better as a _board game_ is a plus, but that is entirely a matter of preference. However I do think there's a nice variety to the characters, and everyone has their roles to play based on their skills. Eldritch will brutally punish you if you're doing something you really shouldn't. Proximity is certainly a huge factor, but skillset is still there.

That is true as well. Arkham Horror is far easier to play with boneheaded players than is Eldritch.
