That's pretty awesome. I've done something similar with Risus , just making up the adventure and threats as we went along. I just picked up Vs Monsters to try a light horror-style system with a little more structure.

When I picked the Pathfinder Beginner Box, it was really intended as a pick for new GMs. Alongside Sandman: Map of Halaal which practically carries you through the process of running a game.

Choosing for new players and an experienced GM, you can be much more flexible. The Basic Roleplaying system (Call of Cthulhu and friends) is pretty much the easiest to teach a non-roleplayer. Percentages on a character sheet are really easy to understand.

New to the discussion is Dungeon World. The rule is: Roll 2d6 + Stat. 2-6 is a fail. 10+ is succeed. 7-9 is a success, but with complications. The rest of the chrome for how to play a character class are RIGHT THERE on the character sheet. Every class is different, and complex ones might have a second sheet to deal with spells.

The problem with Dungeon World is the GM role. The description of what to do with the bag of tools provided by the game engine is danced around, and I'm pretty sure only make sense to an experienced GM. It took me awhile to get it myself.

Seconding Dungeon World so fucking hard.

e: If you read the Bean plays D&D link from the top of the page it isn't too disimilar to how a good game of Dungeon World works.

i concur. Some new school games are very rules light but require a lot off the cuff from the gm. Despite being rules heavy dnd 4th ed and pathfinder are probably still the best starter games because they click with the modern videogamer and have lots of beginner materials. They are a bit dull imo though.

A bit of an update since I started this thread. The kids (15 and 12)and I got our feet wet with the free dnd playtest kit which took a awhile to wrap my head around and we played a couple of sessions in the summer.

In the fall an acquaintance, seeing my Facebook posts, offered me his copy of the Red box. The kids rebuilt their characters, Sylvianna the Elf Cleric for the 12 year old and Ryhsduil the Elf Rogue for the 15 year old. We only got through the rebuild before things became to busy to start an encounter. Fast forward to a few days before Xmas when the oldest said she wanted to play on Xmas Eve, my wife overhearing that said she wanted to play as well. I was surprised as no one in my family likes to play boardgames. After Norrin the Elf (yes, my family has a thing for elves)Fire Wizard was created we started in on the first 3 encounters over the holiday break.

Another buddy also gave me a shit tonne of power cards for various classes as well as the 4th ed rules compendium, which helped out greatly as the red box misses some pretty important definitions and rules.

All in all much fun was had by all. Depending how the rest of the encounters go I may stick with this system for a bit. I'll probably also have a closer look at the Pathfinder Beginner box down the road .

My vote is for Advanced Fighting Fantasy. You want the character created fast so the kids can get into the action. As you move through that first adventure you can start getting their ideas about their characters. Minimal stats are the key. They don't need a bunch of skills or feats right away.

Cheers,
mb
