HILLSIDE, NJ – August 14, 2015 – WizKids, maker of quality board games and miniatures, is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Star Trek: Frontiers. Designed by Andrew Parks, Star Trek: Frontiers puts a new spin on the bestselling board game Mage Knight, by Vlaada Chvátil.

“Like the Mage Knight board game, Star Trek: Frontiers allows players to explore areas that are new and different each time they play. I can’t wait for Star Trek fans to start commanding their Federation and Klingon ships as they encounter Romulan Warbirds, send carefully chosen away teams down to unknown planets, and challenge the might of the Borg,” said Frontiers game designer, Andrew Parks.

“The Star Trek universe opens up a huge variety of thematic options for a designer, and I specifically hope fans of Star Trek will enjoy the work that Andrew has done to bring the system to the world of Star Trek,” said Vlaada Chvátil, creator of the original Mage Knight.

Similar to Mage Knight, in Star Trek: Frontiers, players will follow multiple scenarios leading them on a journey into the unknown. They will earn Experience Points and further their Reputation as a Captain while commanding their Ship, recruiting new Crew Members and encountering some of the undiscovered mysteries of space.

The Star Trek: Frontiers board game features both competitive and cooperative scenarios and is designed for 1 to 4 players. Solo game scenarios are also included at the end of the Full Rulebook.

Will it have broken ships or warped tiles or tokens different sizes or cards too thin? The final frontier for WizKids is finding a decent printer in China.
Seriously its an auto-buy for me and it shouldn't be because of all the quality issues of these products. However, Mage Knight is the game I've played the most in the last 3 years and the solo experience is excellent!

Every time I try to get out, their plastic bits keep pulling me back in.

I have only scratched the surface of Mage Knight. I love that game but it's hard to find time for it. That said, I still want the new expansion, even with the component complaints.

Its kind of astonishing how crappy WhizKids component quality can be given how good the games can be. The latest Mage Knight expansion has monster tiles that are slightly different sizes than the base sets. WTF ? Why not use the same counter die ? Probably a different vendor or some shit. The Dice Masters quality does seem to be improving at least, even if supply is still spotty.

Yeah I'll buy this, even if I've barely played Mage Knight

Probably an auto-buy, regardless, but much as I love MK and ST, I hope it's at least a little different from MK. I don't need a reskin. But Andrew Parks did a great job making ST Attack Wing different enough from X-Wing, so here's hoping...

Wow. Ok. I'll try to avoid this but will probably be unable to.

Also, much as I love MK exactly as it is, it wouldn't hurt if this version could simplify some of the combat details... I still have to check all the resistances and such every time I play MK. Would probably help the theme/setting pay-off its accessibility better, too. I don't want Mage Knight Lite, but a little bit lighter would be great for this property.

Sounds like an exciting idea, but I'm more than a little sick of chintzy cards, broken minis, thin and warping tiles, and tokens where the print actually rubs off after only a couple of plays. For me, Wizkids has become synonymous with "Great licenses, shit quality."

Can we not go ahead and turn this over fully to the GF9 guys yet? I thought from their announcement that they were getting this license permanently.

This is an auto-buy for me in all likelihood. I've passed on Mage Knight since I already own like 6 fantasy adventure systems. Putting the Trek license on this will make it different enough that I'll probably jump onboard. Plus I can start fresh...Mage Knight has a few expansions out which has also made me hesistent about picking it up.

What's the deal with all of the Trek games coming out lately?

Yeah, I got this press release this morning and I was just like "yep, I'll have one of those please".

The Trek license holders must be aggressively marketing it or something...there's this, the dice game over at Mayfair (which also sounds really good) and then whatever awesome thing the GF9 boys come up with. I think the success of Attack Wing might have emboldened them...because really, that was the only really good Trek game in a long time, and one of the only ones to really have any kind of traction since...ever.

WK's legacy is definitely one of chintzy, subpar product...but I have yet to have any of the more severe issues with the stuff I've gotten from them. Touch wood.

So many auto-buys. I don't blame Wizkids for not giving a shit about quality. They'll sell out and make a bigger profit from cheaping out on quality. Gamers will buy anything if its nostalgia based.

Wow. I don't know what to think. I will probably wait to see what GF9 does with Trek before jumping on board with anything from WK. The Mayfair Trek dice game was fun, and we will probably pick it up, but it doesn't scratch that Star Trek Adventure itch at all. If GF9 can do Trek the way they did Firefly then they will probably make my FAVORITE GAME OF ALL TIME!

I dunno about this. Trek deserves better than another cut and paste from PizzKidz.

I'm surprised people actually think the Trek version of X-Wing is good. They didn't include firing arcs or dials into the equation of points cost on models, which is public knowledge. Everything I've read about the game is that the tournament scene is a bit of a mess and you have to run crazy cross-faction lists to compete, or play the Borg.

Not that the writing wasn't already on the wall for Star Trek Fleet Captains with the half-developed yet still released Dominion expansion, but I think we can consider that coffin fully nailed shut now.

So my first thought was one of disbelief. "No way is this going to be any good." Now that I've thought about it for a little while I'm genuinely excited. I think there's a great game to be had here.

I doubt it could be a straight port, although that'd probably be fun too. It would probably need to de-emphasize combat and emphasize exploration to really feel like Star Trek. But then I think about the way the reputation mechanic could be used to make diplomacy with alien species really pay off, and how as the game goes different races could become enemies. That's pretty cool, and already pretty much there with Mage Knight.

Also I agree that the system could use some streamlining. Like Grudunza said, nothing extreme. Just make it so that combat isn't quite so onerous.

If you become an early adopter for the base set, prepare to be fucked by printing inconsistencies in later expansions. Wiz Kids will often do another print run of the core game which will be consistent with the expansion release, but if you have earlier editions it's on you to come up with "solutions" to hide stuff like visibly different tiles, cards, chits punched the wrong direction or of different sizes etc, etc.

I love Mage Knight but I don't think the way it tells a story really suits Star Trek... this is the first time I've felt this way in years but I kind of feel like a good Trek game with real exploration and social problem solving like in the OS needs a decent amount of text helpers. It's one of the few times I've felt this way and I'm actually kind of surprised that I do. Mage Knight is great but the way it tells it's story and the repeating encounters ... I'm just not sure yet. It will take a major overhaul of the system to pull this off.

That said, if they do it, if it works. I'll be buying everything that comes out for it and play the living hell out of it. I may or may not be excited... but I am certainly curious.

I wonder if they'll fix the major flaw where movement is random but combat isn't.

I'm curious about the scale...is it space-based, flying the galaxy...or land-based, where your away team shoots lizardmen or something,

It's space scale. I'm assuming that you'll have very abstracted planetary encounters though.

Done some thinking about it and most of the elements seem to port over easily enough, much of it is obvious. The only thing I'm stumped on is spells.

Mage Knight seems like a misfit, one that was available instead of one that is right. Likely the only work needed was to rename the pieces and the monsters involved though, an easy way to resell the same game.

I always thought Voyage of the B.S.M. Pandora would nail Star Trek with just a minor retheme effort and new paragraphs. Expansions could be published that would add new planets and encounters to the game. That would be a really good fit for Star Trek. It would also be very accessible for more casual players.

My guess is that John Butterfield (yes, THAT John Butterfield) and Edward Woods now hold the rights to Pandora at this point. Seems to me they should be calling someone in spite of that game's age. It's interesting to play and there's more than enough room for red shirts aplenty. I generally get my ass kicked playing it.

Technologies? Although, that was the first thing I thought of for the Advanced Ability cards. So maybe spells could be some kind of upgraded equipment?

Hmmm ... Mage Knights is easily one of my favorite games. I don't really care about Star Trek all the much ... but as mentioned if it streamlines the game a little I could be game for it. But hmmm ... I dunno I don't like just taking a game and slapping a new theme on it.
