Music/Soundtrack Improves Theme?

We used to play Battlelore to the soundtrack of 300. It was awesome, always felt like games could be improved by adding atmosphere and mood like that. Nowadays, I'm too lazy to do this, but I might do that again for WotR.

Anybody else do that?

Absolutely. I first started doing it while running rpgs. When running L5R, I played koto music during the intrigue scenes and taiko drums during the combats. When running Call of Cthulhu, I play '20s jazz during the investigative parts, and then creepy soundtracks like The Thing (Ennio Morricone) and Sorceror (Tangerine Dream).

So I actually did two soundtrack discs specifically for Android. For Arkham Horror, I play the same stuff that I play during Call of Cthulhu. For other AT games, I often just go with energetic modern rock, to keep the pace of the game going... clothing stores in shopping malls do the same thing, keeps the customers moving and more likely to buy.

I remember the one time we were playing Caylus and they were playing some sort of wierd musician. I put my worker on the Inn instead of putting on the spot where I give the King a blow job. As a result, I lost some victory points which mean I ended up losing the game by 1 point. Therefore, we have forbidden music at our gaming sessions....

Just kidding.

If there is a particular theme for the night, I will play it. If not, it's usually just the IPod on Shuffle. I find that playing Naval Wargames to Victory at Sea enhances them.

Anybody suggest a specific song for WotR from the LotR soundtrack?

Just one song? For a game as long as WotR, you might as well play the whole soundtrack, twice.

I play all three soundtracks shuffled during WotR. It definitely adds to the atmosphere. However, I couldn't name any of the songs except for May It Be and that's really not the best one for the game.

Haha. It would be a bit weird to have music from The Shire playing when Sauron comes to crush Minas Tirith.

It would be funny to play a marathon of Police and Sting albums during a game of Dune.

Especially... "Can't Stand Losing You" by the Police.

Yeah we make it through the full three movie soundtracks a couple times at least in a WotR game.

Also awesome is the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack. That first song makes me want to rip dudes faces off in an epic way.
