I think I have that fear as well.
'Government control' is
the present - crikey, you should see what they are up to and planning in the UK:
Most CCTVs in the world (state and private), you go into any city and you can probably be tracked on your whole journey.
Traffic speed cameras are trying to be introduced with number plate recognition so (the excuse is) they can clock you for average speeds between points rather than having to try and laser/photo you at a specfic location speeding, but this technology means they can track any vehicle anywhere in the country in realtime.
Trying to put chips in householders rubbish bin so they can weigh, record, and charge you for rubbish thrown away.
Probably a lot more I don't know about or have forgotten.
Nothing sci-fi there any more ... just fucking oppressive.
But just off on a (very loose) tangent - I introduced three miniatures wargamers to Fortress America last night (christ they're bloody rules lawyers!) and I was reading the foreword to set up the theme .... basically the US is setting up an anti-missile system and the Russians ain't happy and start causing shit over it - no sci-fi there anymore either
