The Clash
Nirvana
Of course the Sex Pistols (high on my list) were probably a bigger change at the time, but Joe Strummer and mates were the massive influence at that time.

The Clash is awesome. Not so sure about Nirvana though. What a fucking Pandora's box this has turned out to be ... I could be here all night trying to put my music in order so I won't - I'll just mention two of my top groups who both changed music at their time

If you can remember what was around in the late '80s it was a massive change .... and I love 'Nevermind', it hardly ever leaves my car CD-changer.

As far as this great change...yeah, if you were listening to junk in the 1980s, I can see where Nirvana would represent a major shift...but when Nirvana hit, I had already gone through US hardcore and thrash metal so all the supposed anger/rage/frustration/whatever was totally lost on me. I was already well pissed off. Black Flag in their prime woulda kicked their asses.
What Nirvana represents to me is the major, corporate-run labels finally figuring out a way to market and sell all that was left of rock n' roll being a threat to mainstream culture and society- the rebellion, anger, dissatisfaction, and "no love songs" credo that only punk, hardcore rap, and metal were really carrying at that time- and turn it into a commodity product. I think after Nirvana the idea of rock n' roll as a revolutionary force or an idea that ran counter to mainstream ideology was lost. Now rock music is a funny joke and the idea that people could hear a rock song and it change their lives, the way they think, or how they feel is becoming more and more distant in popular culture.
Nirvana was really the end of rock being dangerous. And don't get me started on Kurt Cobain. That such a deadbeat, no-talent hack copycat would become a doe-eyed "spokesperson"/t-shirt subject for a generation is disgusting to me.
But you know, one thing I will give them credit for is that they may very well wind up being the last iconic rock band. Since rock is pretty much on the ropes and kids aren't listening to rock music any more, I don't forsee another rock band coming along any time soon that has that really iconic look and feel. As terrible as "Nevermind" is, the songs on it have an element similar to Led Zeppelin or something, in that everybody knows them and they'll continue to have appeal for a long time to come. But they still suck, and they still sound like a third rate version of the Pixies with more metal and less heart.
You can't compare Nirvana and the Clash...the Clash are one of the greatest bands ever, period. They took a lot of chances, they really had something to say (other than the Nirvana-esque "everything sucks, I'm so miserable"), and there's a palpable sense of _life_ in their music that is absolutely transcendent.
