To really capture the feel of the escape from Goblin Town in the movie, you should throw the minis down a flight of stairs while you play.

Ha ha! Yep, they are always falling. It's like 9 hours of falling.

Ok, I really like this game- even just the Goblin Town box.
So it plays pretty much like you'd expect from a GW minis game but it is pre-AoS so some of it is old fashioned (weapon tables!). But it is a COOL system mainly because of the combat. You have a high roll "duel" with what you are engaged with and the winner not only does the damage, they also displace you. Which means that fighting is more fluid and you can get pushed off bridges. There are some other little nuggets like how evil characters can shoot into Merle but good ones can't. Oddly, the system accommodates both big battles and character skirmishes. But I think it is probably best for the latter.
Minis are awesome. They are smaller and are more true scale but the sculpts are excellent and characterful. I love painting the dwarves so far, and it was just delightful painting Gandalf and Bilbo. I just did one Goblin as a test, but I think doing 40 of them will actually be pretty easy.
Granted, I only paid $40 instead of $120 for it so my satisfaction might be influenced by that, but I think there's a game here on its own without buying anything else.
That said, I'd be willing to buy LOTR/Hobbit stuff if anyone is selling. I can see getting into this more.

Just wait until he gets so hooked on lotr that he goes down the war of the ring rabbit hole.
Mass battle system using lotr. Good game, expensive as hell. It was what, IMO, what they should have done with whfb if they stayed with formation blocks.
