Deffkopta figure repair question

More

I've got a Deffkopta whose clear plastic stand has broken. The peg on the top of the stand is stuck in the model and I can't get it out. Am I better off gluing the stand to the peg (impossible?) or drilling the peg out and sticking a new stand in there? Does anyone know off-hand which size of drill bit to use for this task?

I've never worked with a Deffkopta, but I assume that the base is probably the same as an Eldar jetbike or somesuch.

I wouldn't recommend gluing it. It's a quick fix and it would work. However, it would be extremely, annoyingly fragile.

If you've got rare earth magnets, you could always just magnetize by gluing a magnet to the top of the base stand and and another on the bottom of the deffkopta. I've magnetized all of my skimmers this way; it's a stable bond, it's easy to break them down for storage, and you won't have to worry about the stands snapping (which seems to happen all the time in our group.)

You could also pin it, which I'd recommend if you don't have magnets. Sand down the top of the broken base and the bottom of the kopta (where the peg has broken off), and using a pin vice with a small bit (~1mm), drill a hole through straight down through the stand and a matching hole up through the peg receptacle area on the bottom of the vehicle. Use wire cutters to snip a small length of paperclip, dry fit it in the holes you've made to make sure it's the right size, and then superglue it into place. Done!

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll drill it out anyway, I don't have all that equipment.

Heh, whatever's easiest.

I will plug the Hobbico pin vise, though.

Mine ran me eight bucks at the local hobby store and it's got six different super-small bits. It's incredibly handy - I use it for pretty much everything modeling-wise, from pinning and magnetizing bits and bases to unclogging superglue bottles. Just FYI.

Ooohhh, maybe I'll pick one of those up. Sounds easier than a drill. Thanks.

Waaay easier than a drill and easier on the mini to boot.

Good tips here. I have a similar problem with a copy of Bommerz over da Sulpher River that was unplayed...apparently because the previous owner busted every single stand in the set before he could play it....

Where in the Great Canadian North did you pick this up Sleight?

That's so weird, I might be in London in May. Is that store worth a visit?

Shit, we don't have that one on the West Coast. I'll have to check around.

First of all, if you're in London in May then it's worth visiting me to play games.

AVF is primarily an RC hobby store, but it'll be worth visiting if you want to pick up that pin vise. (I mean, assuming they have any in stock, but why wouldn't they?)

@Mabuse: If you don't find anything, I'd be happy to pick one up for you here and mail it your way.
