what do you use as the brush-on sealant? A clear varnish?

GW has a version as does Testors in any Michael's or Hobby Lobby/Town.

I did a very similar process on mine; priming, painting details, and then washing with (brushing on)Minwax Polyshades Antique Walnut. I prefer the Pecan stain, but I wanted a little darker color so I used the Walnut. Here's how they turned out, and like you said, about 45 minutes a pop, maybe less:


The Tyranids, though, I did a little differently. I am a big fan of the "Aliens" movies, and those aliens always seem to be dripping slime of some sort, so I wanted to emulate that. I superglued some dowels to the bottoms of the models and hung them up (after an actual dunking) and I brushed off SOME of the excess. They ended up looking really, really slimy:



The drips pooled by the top of the models, so they have slime appearing to drip off of them from the top down.
