Just finished the series. This show is fucking brilliant. Fantastic storytelling, great characters, both likeable and very well-portrayed, and with a genuinely surprising near-180-degree twist damn near every episode. It's a damn sight better than the half-assed praise from some as 'not good, but fun'. It's bloody well both. (Although I do concede that it was better once they toned down the digital blood after the first few episodes.)
Double good news: Andy Whitfield (Spartacus) is cancer-free and will be returning to filming in October.
I barely made it through the first episode. Took everything I hated about 300 and made a TV show out of it. Seriously I kept expecting someone to yell out THIS IS SPARTACUS! This show isn't trash, its garbage.
Though I must admit I'd be worried about season 2... the setup has it a completely different type of show now.
Agreed. The key for continued success will (obviously) be the push-and-pull struggle between Spartacus and Crixus for the hearts and minds of the escapees. Can they pull it off? I think they can if they manage to keep most of the key people on board (writers, directors, etc.).
Glad to hear about Whitfield. It's always scary to hear about seemingly healthy people getting whacked with the cancer-stick.
Okay I finally watched my first episode and I agree totally with Barnes' OP, only I'm not sure if I dig it, yet.
I'm seeing nothing but overblown stylistic choices (bukkake-like geysers of blood from being impaled by a trident?), stock characters (evil Roman leader) and wooden acting.
I'll watch a few more episodes and see what I think. So far colour me unimpressed.
If not for the recommendations on this site, I would have given up about fifteen minutes into the pilot. Give it until at least the end of the second episode.
Finally finished Season 1. Won't go into any spoiler territory, but what I would say is that there can be great enjoyment in watching a trashy show that understands it's trash.
Okay I finally watched the rest of the first season and I definitely got better by around episode 6 or 7 when...
Warning: Spoiler!
Batiatus has Sparticus' wife killed
The dialogue steadily improved as did the development of the story and the characters. I'm very interested to see how they keep the momentum and tension up in the second season.
Glad you enjoyed it. The first episode isn't very good and the next couple are really just pure exploitation (fighting in the underground against the dude with the leatherface, for example), which isn't too bad. Then it actually gets more legitimately entertaining.
I nice little clip about the incoming new season 'Gods of the Arena', which is actually a prequel. Still looks bad ass. I think the prequel will be nice to see more of the Gladiator storyline, then the slave rebellion storyline(which will also be cool to see)...
