Talk abut Movies & TV here. Just tell us what you have been watching. Have hyper-academic discussions on visual semiotics. Whatever, it's all good.
True Grit

As a fan of the Western, I've been very pleased with the more current releases. Seems like we've had a good run of one great western release at least once every two years starting with Open Range.
Looking forward to the Coen's treatment of True Grit. Not a fan of remakes over all, but if it's good I'm in. And this looks like it could be good.
Granted it's only a teaser.

I was wanting to try out as an extra on this movie as it was filmed like 5 miles up the road from me. But I forgot the date and missed out!
It looks pretty cool. Can't wait to see it,

What the hell... Seriously?!
Why the fuck are they remaking this?! It looks like a scene for scene remake of the original. *facepalm*

I am foreseeing a resurgence in westerns in film. I think the genre has been dormant for a while, and ripe for a comeback. I think you'll see more high rated western remakes(True Grit, 3:10 to Yuma) before seeing some really new original content. But it's coming.

Westerns resurge every six or eight years. They make three of them, don't make any money, and then they go away again.
I loved that tag-line: "Retribution, This Christmas." Sure beats getting socks again.

I watch everything the coen's do (except Intolerable Cruelty) and was only let down by Lady Killers, my love for Alec Guiness should have kept me away but...
I don't normally go for re-makes either but sometimes the people involved trump the material. This looks pretty cool and since I've never seen the original I'll go for sure.
Is the original awesome, should I check it out first?

True Grit was John Wayne only Oscar performance, but I never considered it his opus, but he played the part of an old aging gun fighter to a tee. Then again, he had a lot of practice. It was an OK western, not my favorite. But it was hard to judge today as after a couple sequels in the 70's, the story felt kind of overcooked.

Yes you should. I quite like the original and I'd advise you to just ignore the sequels.
At first I couldn't put my finger on why this particular remake is so upsetting to me. Now that I've thought about it I think it's because this film just looks like a scene for scene remake of the original. For a remake to rate in my book it really has to put its own spin on the materiel, otherwise I keep thinking "I'd rather just watch/read the original". The Coen brothers did this brilliantly with "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and I thought "10 Things I Hate About You" was a funny take on Taming of the Shrew. What does True Grit 2010 have to offer other than some newer faces and making everything look dirty?
