2) Das Boot

I would put The Sorrow and the Pity at #1, but it's a documentary.

In no particular order:

1) Patton
2) Dr. Strangelove (not sure if this falls into the criteria of "war" movie though)
3) Das Boot
4) Saving PRivate Ryan (I know it's not a favorite in these parts)
5) Platoon, Full Metal Jacket or The Boys in Company C

These are the 5 war movies I've enjoyed the most:

5) Tora! Tora! Tora!
4) Cross of Iron
3) A Bridge Too Far
2) Das Boot
1) Full Metal Jacket

I would put in Stalag 17 but it like The Great Escape is in another genre, prison movies.

easy...

5. Stalingrad
4. The Red and the White
3. Come and See
2. Alexander Nevsky
1. Der Untergang

with clips of Riefenstahl's Triumph des Willens as a palette cleanser and Pier Pasolini's Salo! as a wind-down.

Oooh ... in no particular order ...

Apocalypse Now
Sands of Iwo Jima
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket
Where Eagles Dare

No apologies for Vietnam/WW2 slant. It just seems to bring out the best in filmmakers, in a way that older conflicts never do.

Of course Band of Brothers beats all of these into the dust, but strictly speaking it isn't a film.

Paths of Glory
hasn't been mentioned yet? That one needs to be on the list.

I think Saving Private Ryan is just fine.

Haven't seen Das Boot though. On a lot of lists here. Gonna have to check it out.
