Her friend was her roommate for two years during college. Her friend is a lot younger, so her friend thinks of California as the exciting place where she started her career right after college, and sleeping on a couch for six months would be no big deal. My middle-aged girlfriend sort of knows that this is a questionable idea, but it's probably more pleasant to talk to the optimist than the pessimist. I think that inflicting further damage on a weak resume is totally not worth six months of hangouts with the roomie.
