Gotta love the internets when they actually get something right-- fifteen years ago maybe a few hundred people would have heard of these guys.

they've got 46000 downlaods and counting on their myspace page-- more power to them.

10 years ago they'd have been on Epitaph or something like that.

Singin' drummer? Good god, is this Genesis or something?

It's not terrible...but no doubt, little bands like this have a lot more of a chance thanks to the internet.

My favorite song right now? "I Am The Jaw", Chrome. Download it. Download all their stuff, it's mindblowing. I've had the box set for years, enjoyed it and appreciated it but it's only just recently that I've totally gotten into it and realized how fucking amazing that band was.

And thanks to the internet, you don't have to go digging around in record bins all over town to hear it.

Wrong answers.

The band of the month, no year, is American Werewolves. Their new album, The Lonely Ones is the best thing that's been released to this point.

It's like Dicky Barret fronting a more doo-wop inspired Misfits, but far greater than that combination has any right to be and puts all the previous 'fits imitators to rest.

@ Jack: American Werewolves isn't half bad. Is that some rockabilly undertones I hear?

@ Barnes: I only listened to "I am the Jaw", but it immediately struck me that this band has a sound and, especially, a vibe that is very reminiscent of the Fall-- . It's fucking strange really... no virtuousity on display-- but it has this infectious way of sucking you in. Thanks!

For the record, there is nothing wrong with drumming vocalists... bringing up genesis is just bad form,

This is Helios Creed's youtube channel: www.youtube.com/user/HeliosChrome - definitely fits their musical style. Don't enter if you got epilepsy.

Chrome is kind of a bridge between out-and-out Michael Moorcock space rock (ahem, Hawkwind) and post-punk. There's a little metal, a little industrial, a little Stooges-style garage rock in there but as a whole it's a sound that is wholly Chrome. They are one of very few bands (The Fall included) that have a very, very distinct and almost completely idiosyncratic sound. A local reviewer once cited Chrome as a hugely influential band because they literally added new syntax to rock- and I think that's a pretty awesome way of putting it.

The record "3rd From the Sun" is a good starting point for their more accessible material. The title track is incredible, Prong covered it a couple of years later on "Beg to Differ". If you're feeling a little more daring, "Half Machine Lip Moves" is as harrowing and abrasive as anything else I've ever heard.

After Helios Creed left, they kind of meandered on to diminishing returns. Avoid "Into the Eyes of the Zombie King" and everything after. Creed's guitar stuff and vox were really critical to the Chrome sound.

I'm sorry but you're all mistaken, the band of the month is The Sword:

EDIT: By decree Fire Lances is the song of the month too.

this is the best band in the world at the moment:

here's their myspace (though for some reason they haven't put their best songs on it)

The Sword is pretty good if you're into that trad-metal thing.

The other thing I've been listening to is the new TV on the Radio record "Dear Science". TV on the Radio may be the best band in music today. Sort of a cross between old school R&B, Sonic Youth, shoegazer stuff, Afropop, Suicide, Joy Division, and everything that is good in music. One review called it "shit hot thrilling music" and I can't argue with that.

I saw them open for The Faint back in 2005 and I hadn't heard them. They blew me away. I bought everything they had at the merch table and haven't looked back.

Their previous record, the SUPER MARIO WORLD-referencing "Return to Cookie Mountain" is pretty great too- d/l "Wolf Like Me" for a taste.

I like a little TV On The Radio. Wolf Like Me is blistering hot, but I find most of their catalog hit or miss.

However, I do think they're one of the better 'newer' bands out there bringing a fresh sound. The band I posted earlier (AW) isn't bringing anything new to the table, but I feel like TotR is actually new music. I dunno.

Even the newer bands I like are ones that are basically repackagings of music I grew up with.

Take the Aggrolites for example. Love'em. Nothing new though.

Damn you Jack, I wasn't going to tell them that...

TVOTR records are very hit and miss. Their first record, "Desparate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes" is almost 50-50. But one of those 50s is some of the most thrilling, exciting music made in the last 20 years. The other half is OK, but even a deaf-in-one-ear music hater could identify what the standout tracks are. "Cookie Mountain" hits at about 50-50 as well and with similar results. "Dear Science" strikes me as their most consistent record to date, there's only one track that I think is kind of a weak link.

But I think that's all totally OK since when they're on it, they're FUCKING ON IT and they're doing something really different and new. Experimenting means that sometimes things don't work, and sometimes the experimentation is more satisfying than the immediate gratification of being entertained by a good song.

I've gotten tired of the repackaged band sound thing...too many bands over the past couple of years nicking Gang of Four, Joy Division, et.al. to very poor effect. Now it seems like everybody is trying to recapture the Jesus and Mary Chain/My Bloody Valentine sound.
